This would make sense if PootyPoot were say, The Joker. Just wants to watch the world burn. I see him more like The Penguin. I don’t think putting competent political opponents back in power is what he wants.

What Putin wants is Eastern Europe back. What he is planning is a confrontation over the Baltic states or maybe Ukraine with the world wondering if America will live up to Article 5. In that setting Putin might get a big hunk of the old Soviet Union back without firing a shot.

We all screwed up when the old Soviet Union fell apart. We should have rushed in with Marshall plan type aid, rebuilt the Russian economy, installed democracy and invited them into the EU. Done right we wouldn’t be currently facing an expansive foe that doesn’t share western values.

George H W Bush was president in 1991, but Clinton was elected in 1993. There is enough lack of imagination to go around. Anyway our NATO allies should have figured it out what needed to be done as well.

Yah, missed opportunity. Especially since Yeltsin was such a tool, we could have gotten anything we wanted from him, and then some. As it is, only American business interests prevailed while Yeltsin took another drink. Money won.

As long as the Russian economy is Oligarch based the Russian people are screwed. As long a Putin is in power the Russian people don’t have a chance to get rid of the Oligarchs. Not much we can do from the outside except send them TV shows displaying to them how the rest of the world lives.

I am not sure sanctions are all that productive when dealing with an economy that is already on the ground. The Russians are likely to become militant and try to take stuff from their neighbors by force.
