Discussion: WH Confirms Trump Meeting With Schumer Over Looming Gov't Shutdown

Schumer in the White House? I thought the President went to his Florida resort yesterday.

The issue that could cause a Government shutdown is protection from deportation for adults brought to this country as illegally at least a decade ago as children and only know America as their home.

Before discussing the issue, I just want to say that the proper term in my view for adults brought to this country illegally at least a decade ago as children and only know America as their home is AMERICANS.

That said, only about 15% of voters disagree with me that the people we are trying to protect from deportation are in fact Americans and have every right, and as their fellow Americans we have a duty to protect this right, to stay in America. But those 15% of voters who disagree with me are the key to Republicans being in office and holding on to power. Furthermore, nobody understands this better than the current bither and chief, Donald Trump.

The Republican party represents a minority on economic issues. Therefore, to have any realistic chance of winning office and holding onto power, Republicans must rely on other than economic voters. I mean if the Republican party recognizes these Americans as Americans, the 15% who hate these Americans may not still vote for a party and a president who is cutting their health care, education and wages, polluting their water and air and raising many of their taxes all to give tax cuts to billionaires.

The problem I see here (which would be wonderful) is that trump has no cred with young munster or the turtle. So he can announce all he wants that he’s reached a deal with Schumer and will sign a CR that includes DACA and the ā€œwallā€ and some other sweetener. But unless those two bring it to the floor immediately the government still shuts down. (That would be a win for trump and the democrats because it would paint specifically congressional republican leadership as the jerks.)

C’mon, Chuck. Nobody will notice anyway. Ain’t democracy cool?

the LAST thing trump wants to do is miss a party in his honor where he is being paid millions of dollars.

Whatever–if anything–Trump agrees to, make sure that he signs it and it is entered into the Federal Register before assuming that a deal has been made. Trump’s word is about as solid as the troll’s in the Three Billy Goats Gruff story, or the wolf’s in Little Red Riding Hood.

And a fat lot of good that will do. Trump changes his opinion with bewildering frequency. An hour after Shumer leaves, Trump will forget what he agreed to. I hope people who voted for him under the impression that those around him would control him realize the folly of electing a president who needs to be kept under control. Doubtful, but I still hope.

The full radicalization of the GOP electorate where they became a white nationalist party happened during the 2012 primary. The moment I would capture is Rick Perry getting booed by angry conservatives when he begged them to ā€˜have a heart’ on the issue of giving undocumented individuals a pathway to citizenship. For these folks, calling their position as inhumane was itself insulting, as they viewed the matter as an existential takeover of their society by Mexicans. Mitt Romney, ever so pliable but with good political antennae, pandered to these voters by stumbling into the phrase ā€˜self-deportation’. The idea of ā€˜self-deportation’ is that the US government would do nothing on the issue, and grass roots activists of a Joe Arpaio mentality would take care of business on the ground and make life so difficult for undocumented immigrants that they would choose to leave. Romney’s campaign became focused on driving up the GOP share of the white vote and his hard right position on immigration was a big reason why he closed the deal in the primary and got 60% of the white vote in the general election. Trump capitalized on the house that Romney accidentally built. He has added Jeff Sessions and ICE to push people out the door.

Since 2012, the GOP has never gone against the white nationalist tendencies of its base, because they fear getting ā€˜Rick Perried’. The GOP has backed itself into a corner with slippery slope arguments that if they provide a pathway to regular status or citizenship for Dreamers it will open the floodgates for all 11 million undocumented immigrants and that result will essentially end conservative white control of our government. That view is best represented by the Miller-Kelly-Cottonista wing. They have sufficiently convinced Trump that if he supports the Durbin-Graham compromise, that’s as good as surrendering the immigration issue to the Democrats, thereby surrendering on one of their primary reasons for supporting Donald Trump.

The only way I see this ending is that Trump issues a new EO to kick the can down the road. The problem with that is that no one can negotiate an EO with a President, because the President is supreme on drafting EOs. Congress can’t regulate them; they can only sue to stop enforcement or override via legislation. Even if Trump wrote in a promise to extend CHIP indefinitely, Miller would show him some shark videos to freak him out, and he could issue a new EO to override the previous one. So Trump has leverage to use which he will spin as making him look like a moderate, when in reality he created the mess. Once removing that issue Trump would use CHIP as a lever to push Dems to support a budget. I don’t see McConnell and Ryan bringing the Durbin-Graham bill to the floor as it would fracture the GOP. I think both will lobby Trump to issue a new EO and tell Sessions to sit this one out. If I were Schumer, I would tell Trump that Dems won’t support any budget without a DACA trigger of sorts to get it codified. If Trump tells Dems to pound sand on that, then Dems should demand a 10 year extension or permanent approval of CHIP and take their case on DACA to the people.

So I’m starting to wonder about a scenario where Donnie really tries to fix this.

I’ll prefix this scenario by saying if I were in Schumer’s shoes, I’d hold the line on both CHIP and DACA, but imagine a world where Donnie realizes he can’t actually order Congress to do anything. He’s dug the hole and wants to get out.

So how did he get in this hole? He canceled DACA. So, how to get out?

What happens if Donnie offers to reinstate DACA in exchange for Democratic votes on the current CR? He signs a new Executive Order, the Senate then passes the current House CR and the chess clock is essentially reset and play resumes.

I don’t like this scenario, but it seems like the only way things don’t start shutting down in about 10 hours.

Of course, this might feed the ā€œTrump is a loserā€ meme, so he may refuse to play along, but maybe we get lucky and he doesn’t grok this until Fox reports it…

It would seem that the majority of America has already caught on to the con:

@playitagainrowlf - he f*cking had a bipartisan deal delivered to him that included a fix for the Dreamers, border security funding, votes to avert a shutdown and even $1.6 billion of our money for his insane vanity project called The Wall and he shitholed all over it. No mas, no mas.

White House rushing to assure Republicans that Trump isn’t making a deal with Schumer and that he’ll be talking to them too…probably a pretty good sign that he’s making a deal with Schumer.

ā€œNo deals will be cutā€ at Trump-Schumer meeting, source says

A source familiar with the interactions says the White House has reached out to congressional Republicans and allies to reassure them that ā€œno deals will be cutā€ during the meeting between Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and President Trump. They are saying the President just wants to hear what Schumer has to say and is willing to put on the table.

There could be more White House meetings this afternoon.

Deputy White House press secretary Hogan Gidley said there could be more meetings this afternoon with President Trump.ā€œ Obviously he wants a deal — but he wants a real deal,ā€ Gidley said.

I don’t know if anything is going to come of this meeting but didn’t trump brag that the dems would come begging him for a deal? It looks like it’s going to be the other way around

I’m willing to bet Faux News is going to report on that with a headline that says the majority of people would blame the Dems and that the poll results indicate it will benefit the GOP in the 2018 mid-terms to allow a shutdown.

They’re already spinning all this as Schumer being blamed, chastised and ā€œSUMMONEDā€ to the WH like he’s Trump’s bitch.

The only reason Trump has asked Schumer to meet with him is so he can blow it up and then blame Schumer for it in hopes that shifts the blame.

I say no quarter, no mercy. FUCK. THEM. They need to be beaten like baby seals and dumped in the polar bear enclosure.

If he’s smart, he’ll have brought a gallon of ice cream (vanilla, of course, it’s white) and just one spoon but will have laced it with some now-legal special gummies from Nancy’s state…
