Discussion: WATCH: The Jon Stewart Ferguson Segment You've Been Waiting For

Discussion for article #226907

“Race is there, and it is a constant,” Stewart said. “You’re tired of hearing about it? Imagine how f*cking exhausting it is living it.”

Leave it to TDS to get right to the heart of the matter.

Best writers in the business. And by that I mean the news business, which is sad and amusing at the same time.

How about Jon Stewart instead of Chuckles as host of MTP? That might make it more “edgy”!

I wish I had an empathy wand that I could point at the hard-hearted cretins that dwell at Fox News.

You don’t suppose Mr. Olivander has any of those in his shop do you? Sigh.

It would definitely make it edgy. It would also mean that no newsmaker or pundit worth his/her salt would ever appear on the show again, which would not solve its ratings woes.

Fox engages in racebaiting 24/7.

Karma is going to get them for the evil they constantly commit.

FOX engages in selling information. If being outrageous or salacious or offensive will get the job done, there won’t be any changes anytime soon.
You can tell this because if the mood swings nationally on a specific topic, or at least becomes more obviously one-sided, the talking points change with it.
FOX sells to their core audience and as long as they keep buying it, why should FOX care about right and wrong.

Thanks John. It’s always noted that you have to get fact from a “comedy show”.laughing is the opposite of crying and at times his essays put you in that strange position.IMHO.

Especially at the end there, where he put the comedian persona aside for a pretty powerful moment, what you see here is the difference between genuine and fake moral outrage. It’s no accident that one of the best comedians working today is also our main truth-teller. That’s a tradition that goes back centuries. The sad thing is he often seems like the most prominent of a lonely few people in this society willing to tell people what’s really going on. But we’re lucky to have him—he’s our Will Rogers, Edward Murrow, and several other people rolled into one.

Genius! An absolute gem of a comment demonstrating again the bottomless vacuity of the Fox machine.

Yes, John Stewart rips Faux up, but he has a shit ton load of material to work with.
Faux is ripe for the plucking, Stewart just has the balls to go for it and laugh at their feeble attempts to whine about it.

Faux sucks and blows. The comedy angle of that makes it a little less painful and clarifies some things. Like, they clearly are heartless bastards avowed to undermine America with their manufactured outrage and literal lamebrains.

Newsmakers and pundits are on TDS all of the time.

News shows should engage in journalism. The over-the-air networks get free access to the spectrum, and should repay that by subsidizing their news devisions. Ratings should not be the primary factor.

“no newsmaker or pundit worth his/her salt would ever appear…” <

How is that different from Meet today?

Are you saying the current collection of regular newsmakers (mostly John McCain and Lindsey Graham) are worth their salt and just why do we want useless political pundits on a show called “Meet the Press?”

I can only hope that tonight he tackles the incredibly flagrant mismanagement, incompetence and manipulation of this case by the Ferguson PD, which has been obscene from day one.

If by ‘edgy’ you mean diligent, factual and reality based, then no, they found the perfect corporate stooge and lackey in Todd.

Correction: Fox sells Disinformation and most of the time Misinformation. People who work there have sold their souls to the devil.

This was such a powerful statement that nearly brought me to tears. It’s exhausting, tiring, and at times so depressing. A few days ago one of our resident trolls accused me of making everything about race. I ignored the stalker but chuckled at the fact that a realLiberal is as out of touch, ignorant, useless, and as ensconced in his own white privilege as the biggest bigot on Fox. In fact, a trend I’ve noticed is that the more far left, the more likely the person is to be consumed in privilege almost to the point that I loathe labeling myself a liberal.

Just the other day a woman I know told a good friend of mine that the only reason she didn’t invite me to a recent get together is because she’s afraid to have my cousin in her home. My cousin, a guy almost always clad in golf shirts and slacks, has no record and may be one of the least intimidating people you’d ever meet. The guy works at fucking J. Crew, for chrissake! But 6’2 black man=dangerous. It’s not necessarily the police shootings that produce the kind of anger we see in Ferguson, it’s the small, everyday cuts and slights that would drive you mad if you weren’t so used to it.

Good for John and spot on

Dear Plucky. Your story about not being invited for the reason given is more than an outrage. I have been hoping for 50+ years that things would significantly change for the better, but I only see it getting worse. The only thing that keeps me sane is that 10,000,000 more people voted for our President than didn’t, so it gives me some hope.

I still believe that it will take white people standing up and being outraged and demanding that things change, before anything will.

It’s important to remember that Fox News is a capitalist enterprise marketing a product to a carefully researched demographic. Yes, they engage in polemics to influence their audience–but only in ways that THEY KNOW their audience wants to be influenced. In other words, Fox is ALWAYS preaching to the choir. Is is horrible to have such unenlightened data feeds injected into the civic domain 24X7? Yes. But of course this sort of thing has been happening forever–the only thing that has changed is the ubiquitous nature of the TV medium. My point is, the people who tune into Fox news are JUST as clueless about the problems of being BLACK in America–Fox knows this, and does not care. After all, they are not Communists. FOX news are Masters of Spectacle. It’s all bullshit, they know it, but it’s how they put bread and butter on their tables. It’s a soul eating enterprise, but so is refining tar sands to fuel your Humvee.
