And appropriate apology would be “I offended you. I am sorry. Please accept this apology.”
An apology must be meant for the one who did the offending as much as it is the one offended. Both need the healing. Frequently the offender misses the whole point and succeeds at nothing. Usually blame is foisted elsewhere. Parents should teach their kids what an apology is in actual practice. I did with my son.
An apology isn’t rocket science. It’s a wonderful yet simple concept.
I think this encounter would, in fact, motivate them to vote.
Had I been a teen and present for that lesson in civics dealt out by that rep. I would have been turned off to politics. In general our really intelligent people want nothing to do with politics for all sorts of very good reasons. My local state senator somehow manages to be forgiving and magnanimous in very trying circumstances. AZ is very red and he is a democrat. Sometimes I entertain sharing his blog here to demonstrate the utter insanity that is AZ state politics. But lacking his permission I won’t. Dang ethics anyway.
A classic “nonpology” that anyone who knows a narcissist will recognize immediately.
When I was a teenager, I went to Olympia to be a Paige for our state senator. The liberal atmosphere in Olympia was offset by the intense homophobia of our senator. It pained me to answer the phones and hear support for his position that gay people should have no special rights. I was 14, but knew this was wrong.
Year slater this senator became mayor of my town, Spokane. He didn’t last long. He left when he was caught soliciting a 17 year old boy for sex.
This didn’t turn me off to politics. At 18, I supported the campaign of Tom Foley. He lost. Then Patty voted for DOMA. That turned me off to politics.
Hard not to picture the SNL version of this event, where the Rep. asks if they are virgins, they all nod their heads yes, the Rep. smiles knowingly until one of kids explains that being a virgin means you only participate in sexual intercourse.
Do these people TRY to be parodies of stereotypical “Christian” loonies?
Yes.
Not her kids. Busybody bible bitch.
I personally think virgin should be a word that is retired. The only people who care about it are patriarchs concerned over their female chattel. Furthermore, it implies that if a woman has sex, even if it is non consentual, she is somehow less of a person, or different.
So I like the idea you raise that virgin means your sex is listed to intercourse… Kind of like the distinction kids make between basic / freak.
It’s more like “a few of the thoughts I shared, like calling them a bunch of whores, may have come across as more Taliban-esque than what they would expect from their Teahat-in-the-ass representative.”
“It seemed kind of insane for her to say that, especially on the record, to constituents,"
I am glad that your political awakening included exposure to just what we’re dealing with here, kid. These conservative fucknuts are indeed insane and I’m glad you realize it, because it’s their insanity that will leave you a fucked up world to live in if you don’t help everyone else do something about it.
What was her point. Is she wondering if they needed an abortion?
Birth control serves many necessities, beyond giving prudes something to butt their noses into other people’s business about, that is,
Yeah, that line didn’t work for me 40 years ago and I don’t think it’s gonna work for her now.
Actually she “represents” the 9th District in western Washington (Tacoma-Bellevue area). BTW: She can see China from her house.
See quote me below.
Sounds to me like the “purity patrols” in Saudi Arabia or Iraq these days.
And yet if I’d asked I’d probably have been in handcuffs an hour later.
“One student, Alex Rubino, told the newspaper the comments were ‘kind of insane.’”
Silly Alex. You’re confusing “insane” with “Republican.”
Actually the term is “mother-fuckerly”
I quote myself:
