Obviously I don’t know what records she has…but if she does have credible evidence and witnesses, this goes to the framing.
Because it positions her as nothing more than a blonde prop. When she tries to push back on it, they dismiss her and make jokes about it. That’s all part of framing the environment that pervades her show.
I do agree, that its certainly not nearly enough. But, I suspect she has much more damning stuff loaded up.
I’m not saying she wouldn’t have a right to complain about being treated like a “blonde prop,” as you say, in most contexts. Unfortunately for her, blonde prop is pretty much the role she signed on to play. Again, if if sign up to do a sex scene in a movie, you can’t complain afterword that everyone on the set saw you naked or that your costar fondled you (during the scene, that is).
Alright…lets say she is hired to play the role of a blonde prop. That means that Fox will have to put that in her contract, or have some other documents showing that their intent was to only have their as a blonde female to sit and look pretty.
That goes a LONG way to proving what sort of environment exists. If Fox wants to go there, they open themselves up to numerous lawsuits up and down the company.
If, as is much more likely, her contract doesn’t define her role that way, but instead defines her as another co host on the show…then her being demeaned again shows the environment, as well as showing that Fox wasn’t living up to their contract.
The extent, nature of the evidence and the seriousness of the crime will not matter. I think that since conservative businessmen and luminaries like Roger Ailes are being called out for their sexual harassment, Chief Justice Roberts will step in on behalf of Republicans and the Republican Party.
Roberts just saved Bob McDonnell by claiming that taking suitcases of money, Rolexes, Ferraris and vacations and stealing from the Governor’s mansion was perfectly fine as long is was not done as an official act. I think Roberts will be more than willing to make sexual harassment, especially by conservatives, impossible to prosecute just as he has made bribery impossible to prosecute. I think it is a logical extension of the conservative idea that money and talking about sex are free speech.
From what I’ve seen of her male cohosts, they are equally beyond worthless and could very well be considered props, also. What about the whole show, by design, was ever about anything more than imbecilic banter?
Aides was just waiting to leverage power to get sex. Hard to know if he did it early in his career, but it seems clear once he had consolidated a great deal of power by being the honcho at FoxNews, he regularly used that position to intimidate, harass, and violate. Now he’s rich and connected, so probably no prison time in his future, but he’s probably going to lose his job and pay out millions. He’ll probably lose influence. And the next leader of the evil empire will step up to the plate. But one hopes the Murdoch kids running FoxN will change the corporate culture. We shall see.
That is always the case in scandals of this nature. They arise out of a culture that feeds on itself because there are no sanctions visible and intimidating to the perpetrators. They have no fear of punishment.
Bill O picked on the wrong victim. And, he used the phone so she recorded his sick talk that he no doubt thought this young woman would find titillating in some way.
Once the suit papers land and discovery begins, the Fox lawyers will recommend settlement. Why? It’s cheaper in the long run vs. hundreds of billable hours in court and elsewhere. “Gimme $xmillion and I’ll get it settled and put to bed with non disclosure agreements” is the way the conversations go.
There are some heavy duty law firms on 5th Ave and Fox will listen.
I disagree, these knotheads would see joking back as acceptance, folks like this have very little self-awareness and need to be told very directly that they are stupid f*cks, or something to that effect.
The reality is that she does not have any talent to be anything more than a blond prop. It’s certainly possible that Ailes asked for tail at some point, but she didn’t mind until she was fired. She is doing all this out of spite. Both Gretchen and Ailes are in a situation similar to Robin Thicke when he lost a BS suit for plagiarism: “Yeah it’s unfair, but it could have happened to nicer SOB”
Yeah, if this ever goes to trial (which I’m assuming won’t happen) we might get to see exactly what sort of contract FOX News employees sign. My take on this is that FOX News has been around for nearly two decades. In that time, they’ve managed to cross the line of “political correctness” nearly as often as the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket. I can only speculate as to why they haven’t been in trouble before for openly maintaining such a hostile work environment. Two ways I can think of that would allow for them to get away with this are:
Pay lots of people lots of money to shut up (off the record, of course) or
Make sure that the contracts contain specific language that would make it very difficult, if not impossible, for employees, especially the ones who go in front of the camera, to complain about that sort of treatment.
Again, I haven’t seen any of their contracts so, who knows? Still, I find it hard to believe the Gretchen Carlson is the first FOX News personality to be unhappy about how she was treated on the air (or off).
In a responsible business does not take much…I had a new hire who for first week wore sheer blouses and with a couple of buttons undone. I made mention to a long time woman colleague that she may want to clue the new hire, being that she was right out of college. The colleague was in HR and it was part of her job to enforce proper professional dress, this was suit and tie era. Especially as the hire was client facing. Did not matter and I soon found myself with a reprimand letter in my file. As I was the COO/CTO, after showing a security video of both the dress and another of my asking HR to clue the hire in, I stated that we had a decision to make as I felt a reprimand was uncalled and we as a firm were being set up for a discrimination case. Male board members hemmed and hawed until both women members of the board stated they agreed and wanted them out before more damage was done.
Let’s say that I set a dress code that requires men to wear pressed suits, nice ties, polished shoes, and to be well groomed. The code also requires women to wear either a short dress or skirt that goes no lower than 2 inches above the knee, requires shaved/waxed legs, and be well groomed. (this is pretty consistent with the accounts of Fox News anchors)
Pretty demeaning, and clearly suggests that the women are for eye candy (though I think there are probably a fair number of women who like to see attractive men in suits…not that these guys are attractive, but you get the idea).
Is there something legally wrong with this? Not necessarily. You have the option not to work for Fox News. You could say, “I’ll try my luck at abc, nbc, cbs,” or “I’ll do real journalism in the field” or “I’ll write for a conservative site/blog.” There are female contributors who have left over the atmosphere and culture at Fox News. By staying, you are on the most watched “news” network on TV. In exchange for the misogyny, you get a big pay check. At the end of the day, this isn’t news - it’s entertainment.
Now, none of this is to say the off screen sexual harassment is okay, or that she “brought it on herself.” But those on screen interactions seem different. She’s joking and laughing (compared to Ingraham who looked disgusted). She eventually spoke out, which is what you need to do, if they do nothing and there is a culture of harassment, you should bring it to HR, bring legal action (if warranted), or leave. If the company isn’t going to change, then you shouldn’t work there. Shout it from the mountain tops and tell other women that they shouldn’t work there so they don’t also get harassed. But instead, she just moved to a new time slot!
Idk. I do feel bad for her, maybe I’m unfairly laying blame on her.
There are real gray areas here IMO with all the participatory laughter going on between the girls and the boys like in the junior high cafeteria. Carlson tried to play verbal volleyball with these blokes like it was going to do any good. I say the women at FOX are going to have to be even tougher, straight-faced, and strike fast and harder if they want change. Acting “cutesy” never works.
