Discussion: Utah GOPer Issues Amazingly Candid Apology For Calling NAACP Racist

Discussion for article #222310

There. Consider that bell un-rung…Because NO OTHER Republican will ever repeat my words to call the NAACP racist again.

Looks like RNC held a blowtorch to his balls on this one.

Loving all people is a wonderful thing, but the problems of racial injustice in America in 2014 are not really about people feelings.

I live in Utah, and like most politicians in this state, he’s a loon. That said, what do you call an organization that exists to promote the agenda of a specific race, if not “racist?”

He may have a minor technical grammatical point.

United they stand, divide the crackers crack?

Oh, he grew up in a family! A real one. Sorry he offended us non-family-growing-up-in folks! Why, he might even have been offended himself, had he been so unfortunately ill-bred!

He grew up at “Ground Zero” of the Civil Rights movement but was unaware of all the NAACP has done throughout the years?
Hmm, I think he’s overstating his racial bona fides here.

For the record, I am not at all happy with the NAACPLA chapter being in bed with Sterling - given his racist actions in the past and the fact that they should have KNOWN about it before giving him the award. Still, I do acknowledge they are an overall good organization whose intentions are good and have provided help to a lot of people since their inception. Pretty sad how this guy missed the mark by calling them racist but it’s nice to see him own up to his error.

How about Necessary?

Not really.

Webster’s defines Racism as: a: “poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race” and b: “the belief that some races of people are better than others”

Seems that NAACP doesn’t fit that description does it? The NAACP do not treat other races poorly or are violent against them, are they? and the NAACP doesn’t believe that their race is better than others, do they?

I think there is a BIG difference between espousing the “advancement” of a group that has has a history of being institutionally prevented from “advancement” in this society. We need to remember that.

And he was, in his own words, a “hero of the civil rights movement,”

Hero!

Quick and dirty version: The only thing I am sorry for is that I got caught with my foot in my mouth and then people who really aren’t racists proceeded to relocate it to a different bodily orifice.

From Wikipedia :
'Its mission is “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination” ’
Pretty much not racist.

I think most of you are missing my point, which has everything to do with grammar and nothing to do with race, per se. I accuse the NAACP of nothing.

So what word do you use to describe an organization whose sole purpose for existence involves race, if “racist” doesn’t apply? Racey? Racesque? Racian?

I’m not even specifically referring to the NAACP here; any such organization would qualify.

I thought we might have some cunning linguists here. Apparently not.

How about … anti-ignorance?

I get your point. I suppose conversely that ¨arborist¨ could mean someone who discriminates against trees. But we pretty much agree that it means a person who works on trees, like we agree that a racist is someone who discriminates against some other ¨race¨.

I apologize, Charlie. I didn’t mean that reply to be read so snarky.

While he may not be a racist, one thing he certainly is NOT is a comic … because I see nothing funny about his original “joke.” And just by saying that … well if the shoe fits …

Could’ve done without the pretending it was a joke part, but this is a much better apology than the usual one Republicans give, which is “I’m sorry if anyone was offended.”
