Discussion: US-Iran Strike Historic Nuclear Deal

Discussion for article #238387

Proof!

Here’s all one needs to know that whatever shakes in this deal is a postive for region.

The deal is a “bad mistake of historic proportions,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday, adding that it would enable Iran to “continue to pursue its aggression and terror in the region.”

Waaaaaaa…

Reposting from the earlier story: this tweet is from several hours before the deal was formalized, but it’s a very simple graphic from Third Way (yeah, I know) via Ploughshares’ Joe Cirincione, showing why experts have supported this effort – aside from keeping us from being the idiots who’d be responsible for blowing up the international consensus on sanctions, of course (ask your crazy wingnut uncle what his brilliant alternative would be then):

Looks like this’ll be a terrific, historic day. Immense thanks and congratulations to John Kerry, and to our great President.

It will be interesting to hear which Republican Presidential candidate’s head explodes the loudest.

They’re all gonna be claiming that the end of the world is nigh. And we’d better pay attention to them, 'cos look how right they were about the disastrous effects of Obamacare and Gay Marriage!

This is the best news to come out of The Middle East since Anwar Sadat signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1977. Let’s hope it holds

I think it is pretty clear that the real “existential threat” that Israel perceives is not the actual Iran deal, but rather a good working relationship between the U.S. and Iran. That would pretty much eliminate the need for America’s special relationship with Israel.

It’s so much easier to gin up the political base, and identify a country or belief system as an existential threat. It gets votes, it produces hefty arms contracts, and keeps the military at a fighting edge. The costs of such a philosophy are rarely discussed, apart from the excuse that “security demands sacrifice”. Well, that depends on whose security, and whose sacrifice.

What we’ve learned since World War II is that diplomacy— the arduous, boring, and nuanced process of reaching accord with potential enemies as well as friends— offers the best and most long-lasting security. The old bromide is true: when peace is the result of treaties, most people are too busy making money and leading their own lives to care about starting a war. When peace is the result of unilateral military adventurism, the results are mixed at best. One thing is certain when following that course, that the world will remain insecure and unstable. We seem unable or unwilling to see the evidence of this truth in our recent misadventures in the Middle East. And now the neo-cons and Republicans want to invade Iran. Or Syria. Or god help us, the Ukraine.

It’s the difference between hard work, and hardly working. Guess which option is hardly working…

The fact that Tom Cotton, Lindsay Graham, Nicolle Wallace and other witless right-wing jerks are already up in arms about this deal—despite their not having actually read it yet—shows me that it’s a good deal with a real chance of success over the long term.

Netanyahu won’t like any deal that doesn’t involve bombing Iran, so his bloviations are meaningless.

So the assorted wingnuts will huff and puff and the deal will go through, further cementing Obama’s legacy as the most consequential president since FDR. This will further enrage the Reagan worshipers, who will conveniently forget how the far right vilified St. Ronnie when he made similar historic agreements with Gorbachev.

All in all, this is a great day for peace.

JM I read a similar analysis back in April. Bibi is worried more about the US and Iran thawing their relationship. That is the real threat to Israel from Bibi’s perspective.

Had to turn off Mo Joe. The level of Lilliputian blather was too much. Gave it a second try a few minutes later. Still predictable talking points from the Republicons talking heads. then cue Grraham. Ugh.

“All in all, this is a great day for peace.”

Right, Obama The Peace President.

Let the worshiping commence.

Pathetic.

You know . . .

Since the Republican presidential candidate’s heads are empty, it’d be more like implode.

Trump will bloviate, but that thing on his head will prevent a total meltdown.

Here’s the platform or playbook for the Regressive Rightwing Republican Party!
Notice how closely all 14 of these points follow the republican’s in almost every single thing they do!

Not even a warmongering prick can tarnish this accomplishment.

However, the warmongering pricks in the Senate can scuttle it. So don’t worry: you and your buddies stand an excellent chance of getting the war that you’re evidently itching for.

So let the celebration commence. Vile.

“Trump will bloviate”, and he just got his words in place to scare the bi-jeeses out of about the Mexicans. What’s a billionaire going to do?
