So far, Lindsey Graham’s head seems to be in the lead. A very good indicator, I’d say, of the wisdom of this agreement. People who come out against this agreement are, quite simply, blood-thirsty, war-loving nihilists.
In Civilization & Its Discontents, Freud says that It is possible to “bind any number of people together in love” as long as some group remains outside against which they can direct their hatred.
TJIrish, as my university equated plagiarism with “carrying a gun and dealing heroin”, I have to say that I probably read the same analysis!
I should have cited it and said that I really think that is the motive behind Mr. Netahanyu’s stance.
I’d love to celebrate, but I’m not just yet. I’m wondering what exactly has been accomplished. They get to trade arms in 5 years, can import/export ballistic missile tech in 8 years, while not having to undergo unannounced inspections and get a large lifting of sanctions. I know, the article is wafer thin on details, but I’d like to see a fuller description of what the world has gained from this before trumpeting the deal as something spectacular.
As odious as Bibi can be, let’s not kid ourselves about Iran. Their government is not good a actor. I think this treaty is an important first step in bringing Iran back into the International fold, but it’s going to take decades and systemic changes in Tehran for Iran to become anything close to approaching a true partner.
I agree. But the future you describe is a fucking utopia compared to the world we’d live in if Bibi, Lindsey Graham and the rest of them got to make Iran policy.
This agreement is not about making Iran a “true partner.”
Nor is is about making Iran our friend.
It’s about nuclear non-proliferation, and it’s the best thing on that score since the SALT treaty in the 80s.
Whoever is paying you to troll this site is wasting their money. But, you’re good for a chuckle, so by all means keep at it.
Bravo Mr. President!
Agree, and since the Obama administration is keenly aware of and has anticipated the concerns – justified or otherwise – of the opponents of this deal, I think it stands a good chance of getting through Congress.

Darcy/ClarenceVine was CELEBRATING the ACA website glitches.
That should tell you all you need to know abut his mindset.
Remember, lots of US Senators and Congresscritters hated THAT deal too.
working out differences without blowing each other brains out… how original.
Do you believe that it would have been better if no deal was reached?
solving differences without war… how 21st century and something a GOPher will never appreciate. If America isn’t dropping bombs on another country then America isn’t doing it the RIGHT way…
Trust, but verify – whew! On behalf of all of America’s Reaganites and Neo-cons, I just want to say “Thank you President Putin!”
And on behalf of those of us living in the real world, I just want to say “Thank you President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry.”
True, but they are acting rationally. If they are somewhat rational, then they are better partners than most of the republican party, and a better partner for peace than our “ally” Netanyahu.
now the nobel really means something. excellent work, mr. president.
Obama finally earns his Nobel Peace Prize.
