Discussion: University Of Maryland Investigates 'Reprehensible' Racist Frat Email

And I hope to God someone gave him what he wanted consensually… for the good of all our daughters at that school then.

I have to say, I just am not feeling the outrage these events are causing amongst the media. The Oklahoma one, this one, they are all part of the greek culture. As reprehensible as the behavior is, fraternities have been acting like this since they were formed, and they never stopped. The pearl clutching “I had no idea” crap is incredibly insincere. All greek houses should be banned from all colleges and universities. All of them, no exceptions. They are, by definition, exclusionary which is antithetical to the mission of a university and college, which is to strengthen the community. You want to deal with the college rape problem? That step would almost solve it.

Next week we will be getting the news that this stuff happens in the sorority houses as well. And people will be shocked. Shocked I tell you!

Given that this guy seems to have a clear cut case of Young Republican, I’m just wondering how Jews and Gays seem to have escaped his bigoted insults and rhetoric.

Maybe it’s in the postscript?

Wait a minute, is this a private email between two people or a public email? The content is sick, sick, sick but since when can people not say what they want to in private? Are we the thought police now? The recipient should tell the writer to get lost but it is not up to the university or the media to make every conversation public.

Fraternity system is due for a thorough house-cleaning. May need Hercules to divert a river to do it, though.

Depends on whether he found a place that sells duck salve.

Oh, please. As if frat guys are the only people in college who do anything wrong. Instead, what you’re seeing is that the type of guy who is more likely to act in a certain way is also likely to want to be in a frat. Because as it turns out, drunk girls are also raped at high school parties, which can be just as exclusionary as frat parties. And well, those wild high school jerks go on to be college jerks and join fraternities.

Frats don’t create jerks. They attract them. And if we banned all frats, these guys would still all group together as friends and exclude you, and you’d realize how senseless it is to ban them. Even kids in elementary school understand how the cool kids exclude the non-cool, so why you imagine this is created by fraternities is beyond me. When I was in college I liked how frats separate out the jerks and make them more identifiable, so I know who to avoid hanging with. They weren’t excluding me. I was excluding them.

I guess I didn’t realize that most people didn’t know that frats are full of entitled, spoiled, semi-racist bros who think racism if funny and somewhat secretly true.

I really don’t understand why Universities allow these organizations to exist on campuses. The liability must be enormous. And I say this as a former frat member, one who even served as the chapter president over 30 years ago. I tried to be a change agent then, without any real success. Nothing has changed since.

Absurd.

You didn’t understand my use of the word exclusionary. All groups are by definition exclusionary, a college decides whether or not to admit someone. The problem with the greek culture is that it actually teaches members to place themselves over others. It isn’t about whether or not someone is invited to a party, it’s college, who cares. It is about reinforcing the idea that the trust fund jerkoffs are somehow better than everyone else. And by reinforcing this idea, it makes them think it is okay to act like they do. Not only is it okay, but they do it more, to be accepted by their fellow ‘brothers’. Frats don’t create jerks, they reinforce and enhance their jerkiness.

And comparing the numbers of rapes at high school parties, compared to what happens in frat houses is like comparing the Falklands ‘war’ to WWII. Frat houses, as seen in this email, create an environment where this is more likely than not. They provide a safe haven for rape and rapists, where they know they can commit their crime in peace, and even be cheered for it later.

Do you remember when Barack was elected to first term?

There were A LOT of people who openly said that they or theirs counted the candidate’s race against him and they explained this in a matter-of-fact way.

Typical would be young adult female who like what he stood for. Even though her BF “of course” didn’t like fact that he was black. She and the BF might together consider ultimately voting for him despite this “obvious” drawback. Har har. This was A LOT of people, very open and common.

Possibly not if Lorena Bobbitt was in the room.

Because they grow up to be be rich and powerful alumni whose primary loyalty continues to be to the frat rather than the institution.

Frat alums have the same relation to their frats and their schools that antebellum southerners had to their states and the United States. They may think of themselves as proud alumni of the college or university, all rah rah in the skybox at the games, but when it comes down to cases and its the school against the bastions of drunken anti-intellectualism burrowed into its fabric, they come down, hard and with all force that their money and web of contacts can bring to bear, on the side of the frats.

Never having lived in a sorority house I can’t be sure what goes on, but I’m going to say with all the female authority I can muster that these things don’t happen in a house where women live (I’ve lived in one) because they are macho driven threats and claims and driven by testosterone. Talk of erections, and vaginas sucked and f***ed are not what women talk about.

And again, you’re describing how the cool kids in every school do things. I fail to understand the distinction you think you’re making. As I said, frats don’t create jerks. They attract them. And believe it or not, but these guys already considered themselves to be better than you in high school and earlier. Fraternities simply provide a better way of identifying such people; which I found to be quite helpful in college.

Moreover, this country is chock full of people who never went to college, yet still feel entitled to everything. And rather than get good jobs through their frat connections, they rant about how blacks and Mexicans are denying them jobs and freedom. Frankly, I’m astounded by how many people here are connecting this behavior with fraternities, when it’s so easy to find everywhere else as well.

There are many scumholes on the internet that make frats look like Boy Scouts. Like the sites where the Santa Barbara shooter used to post, teaching all about how terrible women are and how they deserve to be raped; not for fun, but because women are the villains of the world and need to be taught a lesson. So…why are you acting like frats create this behavior, when it’s so easy to find elsewhere? I’m telling you, frats are a symptom of the problem, not the cause.

No, sorority girls are more likely to write emails like “I will fucking c*nt punt the next person I hear about doing something like that, and I don’t give a fk if you SOR me, I WILL FKING ASSAULT YOU.”

As well as “If you are one of the people that have told me “Oh nooo boo hoo I can’t talk to boys I’m too sober”, then I pity you because I don’t know how you got this far in life, and with that in mind don’t fking show up unless you’re going to stop being a goddamn cock block for our chapter. Seriously. I swear to fking God if I see anyone being a goddamn boner at tonight’s event, I will tell you to leave even if you’re sober. I’m not even kidding. Try me.”

So by the standards of that email, the difference between the guys and girls is that the girls are tougher. Seriously though, the idea that girls don’t talk about vaginas and erections is quite precious, and perhaps a little sexist on your part. There are all kinds of people in this world and it’s a mistake to make any assumptions based on race, gender, or other superficial traits.

i call bullshit on the frat’s reaction of OMG HOW COULD HE TALK LIKE THAT. i’m 100% sure that this is how they talk to each other every fucking day.
