My son and grandson live in the Phoenix area where this tragedy happened. Until now I worried most about my grandson getting shot in school. Now both could get mowed down by a goddamned robot car. Wonderful, just wonderful.

Uh-oh. Given that we currently have a Republican administration, the word innovation as used above doesn’t mean what one would think it means. No, what that really says is “guidelines that will foster corporations making as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time” - which often equates to having as few guidelines, rules, and/or regulations as they can get away with.
Add in the fact that what we really have is a bat-shit crazy Republican administration, we can expect deaths from autonomous vehicles to sky-rocket.

I don’t know what Uber’s technology is, but all the autonomous car tech I’ve seen is based on a combination of IR LIDAR and machine vision. Even if it was a Bulwer-Lytton night and the pedestrian was wearing black the LIDAR should have picked her up.
