our cars are killing your people.
do not resist. resistance is futile.
we represent the future of your species.
budget minded. we repeat: do not resist.

Send lawyers, guns and money…the shit has hit the fan…
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chaos

#Bravissimo!
I believe she rubbed her hands together and purred, “Yōuxiù.”
Then she looked up and shouted, “Get the fuck out of here, Mitch!”
Came here to comment on that exact thing
I am willing to bet the persom behind the wheel of this self driving SUV was texting or blabbering on their phone and paying zero attention to what the car was doing.
Self driving cars…the ultimate in distracted driving.
My son and grandson live in the Phoenix area where this tragedy happened. Until now I worried most about my grandson getting shot in school. Now both could get mowed down by a goddamned robot car. Wonderful, just wonderful.
The article mentioned she was outside of the cross walk but I can’t believe that it would not have something that looks for people no matter where they are.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is considering other voluntary guidelines that it says will help foster innovation.
Uh-oh. Given that we currently have a Republican administration, the word innovation as used above doesn’t mean what one would think it means. No, what that really says is “guidelines that will foster corporations making as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time” - which often equates to having as few guidelines, rules, and/or regulations as they can get away with.
Add in the fact that what we really have is a bat-shit crazy Republican administration, we can expect deaths from autonomous vehicles to sky-rocket.
I submit that the fan is poo ready…
“Uber’s testing was halted after police in a Phoenix suburb said one of its self-driving vehicles struck and killed a pedestrian overnight Sunday.”
“One thing a computer can do better than most humans is be sealed in a cardboard box and sit in a warehouse.” — Jack Handy
(But corporate America’s hard at work on a solution to that flaw in humans.)
Necesito una traduccion, tio wally. No puedo Mandarin.
No, the key word isn’t “innovation,” it’s “VOLUNTARY.”
In corporate speak that word translates to…
Or, don’t even bother with it.
C’mon guys and gals, I’m sure it was only a glitch.
I thought that was actually the new office floor plan.
I don’t know what Uber’s technology is, but all the autonomous car tech I’ve seen is based on a combination of IR LIDAR and machine vision. Even if it was a Bulwer-Lytton night and the pedestrian was wearing black the LIDAR should have picked her up.
Is it true the Uber cars are all Buick Skynets?

Chance that Atrios didn’t cover this today.
Obviously, Handy never met me. I used to drive truck!
Accidents happen. The question is would a human driver have made a difference. If the woman walked off the curb at the last possible moment, it is possible nothing the car or a driver could have done would have saved her.
