Staten Island does get a rap for being a reactionary outpost in NYC. However Obama won the island and congressional district which includes a part of Brooklyn in 2012. He did visit the island after superstorm sandy and was well received, even by Congrrssman Grimm.This was after his infamous hug with NJ governor Christie. It’s quite rare for a president to visit SI. The last president to visit was G.H.W. Bush.
The islands pols are a bit more diverse than one would expect. The DA is a moderate Democrat. There is a openly gay assembly member and the council member from the North Shore is a African American woman. The other elected officials are a mix of Democrat and Republican and most are cross endorsed by the minor parties like the Conservatives and the WFP. Sure there are rubes like this fellow and his supporters but the reality is more complex.

Just heard on the radio that ex-con Don Blankenship, who was recently defeated as a candidate for the US Senate in the West Virginia GOP primary (the very day he completed his parole) now wants to run for Senate on a third-party ticket. Lawyers looking into whether that is permitted under WV law. You go, Don! Splitting the GOP vote would be great for the Dems!!
