Discussion: Trump Won't Let GOPers Who Don't Endorse Him Speak At Convention

Another kind of “democracy” in action. All Trumpf needs to do is to give the Nazi salute: “Heil Trumpf”.

Like trying to organize a birthday party for a catty, peevish, easily angered and hurt tween. More complicated than it really ought to be.

And this a Trump who is just a nominee…imagine what he would do if he was President…
“every citizen must buy Trump Steaks for the 4th of July”…

As much as Duh Donald is aspiring to be the first US-American dictator, there is a difference between “I will not let them speak” and “I would not invite them to speak” - nuance is nuance, and should be practiced by journalists.

As much as I’m enjoying this tiff, it’s not an unusual thing. in 1992 Bob Casey was refused a slot because he refused to endorse Bill Clinton:

According to those who actually doled out the 1992 convention speaking slots, Casey was denied a turn for one simple reason: his refusal to endorse the Clinton-Gore ticket. “It’s [Casey’s claim that he was denied a convention speech because of his pro-life views] just not factual!” stammers James Carville, apoplectic over Casey’s claims. “You’d have to be idiotic to give a speaking role to a person who hadn’t even endorsed you.”

I’m no Trumpster, and I wish him all the grief in the world, but this is not out of the ordinary.

Well, it’s the right of Republican Godfathers:

This, of course, gives a very clear idea of how Donnie would select his Cabinet and advisors – only greedy, brown-nosing sycophants need apply. Please leave your opinions and commonsense at the door.

Even if they have endorsed him they won’t be allowed to talk about anything except Drumpf when speaking either. That’s Rule #1. Party business can be done some other damn time.

Rule #2 – the speaker has to talk about Drumpf in glowing terms. Superlatives are encouraged when speaking about Drumpf.

Rule #3 – signing a non-disparagement agreement before speaking is mandatory, just in case you decide to go all lucy-goosey while up there.

Rule #4 – these rules are subject to change without notice, if Drumpf feels like it.

This, on its own, may not be unusual. However, taking this into account with members of the press corps not allowed into Trump events because they wrote something he didn’t like paints a very, very disturbing picture,

He already has, more than once, along with Hitler’s favorite music in the background!!
To think his supporters have spent almost 8 years calling President Obama a dictator!! Now they’re going to actually vote for one. Scary!

A recent Flesch-Kincaid on Trump came in at 3rd grade level. W was 4th grade level and at this rate 2020 will bring us 2nd. Republicans don’t seem to care or just haven’t noticed. As predicted, they’ve weaponized stupid. Trump is as devoid of facts, details and understanding as his drooling and howling hate and rage fueled supporters. As a dismissive, entitled megalomaniac, Trump is a perfect representative of the FOX madeover Republican shit show and this latest “They can kiss my ring, or they can kiss my ass” is only the latest example of his total dominance of the Center Ring in the GOP’s laughable Big Tent.

#Kiss my ring, or kiss my ass.

Hey, Reince, there are still plenty of empty chairs around that you can use.

So…the RNC is finally deemed irrelevant. This is Trump’s party and if you don’t bow down then…nada. Wow.

Ahhhhhh…I was hoping George Will would speak. So I guess Cruz, Rubio and Bush won’t be up there, which is a good thing.

So what? Did you really want to hear from any of those people? Really?

Besides, Donald’s acceptance speech will be 4 hours long, so the TV time will be filled up.

I think the guy is vile, but he’s right on this and it really shouldnt be considered news. No nominee wants dissent within the Party to be made public in speaking assignments, and ever since Buchanan the nominees team vets speeches ahead of time. Hillary will be doing the same thing. She will have to allow Sanders to speak but she won’t allow him to attack her or her campaign.

I agree with you and also with @lizzymom that in general you might exclude someone who hadn’t endorsed you. But this candidate obsessively attacks Republicans who dare to disagree with him, he’s remarkably low on explicit endorsements, and there’s a wide swathe of GOP folks who are steering clear of this convention when ordinary they’d be jockeying for position to be seen there. If this keeps up, who will be giving major speeches? Pete Rosa? Tila Tequila?

Sieg Heil!

The speakers will certainly be a parade of famous people. The RNC is probably already on the phone to various speakers’ bureaus, looking for talent. If you’ve spoken before at least two Elks Club meetings and have entertained at least one toddler’s birthday gathering, you could be on the short list.

I’m really sorry I’m going to miss it, since I’ll be in a part of the world where everything is calm and settled - the south of England.

What?
