I would say Rump needs to replace Mitt as the loser who nobody listens to, so Mitt can join Dole as the loser who people wonder if he’s still alive.

Every morning I pray to whomever is listening that Trump doesn’t snap out of whatever strange trance like certainty in himself that follows him like a cloud.
If he comes up with some excuse to bail on the GOP nomination before November… I will be profoundly disappointed.
I hope he ignores his failing poll numbers, shrugs off his complete lack of political support from the “losers” in the GOP, and just plows full steam ahead into the brick wall of support that is being laid against him.
Republicans have had a tough time in national elections lately, but they’ve seen nothing compared to what happens when you manage to completely alienate EVERY minority voting bloc, the MAJORITY voting bloc that is women, a significant number of the loudest voices on the Conservative Right, and turn off a fair few of the less crazy “values voters” along the way…
Are there a lot of angry, white, ill-educated men; fermented in the FOX News echo chamber of fading white privilege scary minorities coming for you, and a government planing to take your guns, outlaw Christmas, and turn your children gay; out there?
Sure. More, I think than anyone, including the GOP, expected.
But not enough to win a national majority. Not enough, I suspect, even to win a state majority in many states, including all the purple and a few of the red/pink ones.
The only question is if Trump starts to spin his loss as “not really my fault because the system is rigged against me” in November, or if he wises up and bails out before then. I desperately hope the former. I want to watch his concession speech on the evening of 11/8/2016.

I was on a couple of phone calls earlier but I saw your post and read Josh’s piece. Sometimes I overdramatize things in my own mind but I’ve felt the same—this just can’t go on. The GOP has hugely degraded the norms for political discourse, but Trump is casually destroying what norms remain. It’s unprecedented, such a thing has never happened or been imagined, and almost nobody on the GOP side has the moral or intellectual capacity to respond in any constructive way. The term “Vichy Republicans” is starting to take hold, and I think that’s the way it will play out. Anyone who accepted the situation out of venal cowardice will pay the price when the threat is gone.
