If this is such an immediate crisis, why didn’t Baldy declare an emergency months ago when he stood in front of the American people and said he was about to do that? Of course, he lied, but someone still needs to ask him that question.
If it’s an emergency, they can probably arrest more people and hold them for longer. Good luck with that treatment funding when there’s a budget to be cut. (Note, btw, that AP’s reporting is, as usual, kinda crap when they describe different states’ actions. Planning to do something is a big deal for some states, but is a sign of delay for others. And of course “innovation” is almost entirely irrelevant, since we’ve known most of the things to do for 30 years, just been unwilling to spend the money or work on changing external conditions as needed.)

By far the most important thing that can be done to fight the opoid epidemic is to ensure that every American has comprehensive, affordable health insurance. And Trump and the Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to ensure that that doesn’t happen, and indeed to sabotage the health care system.
Whatever else they announce for a soundbite will pale against the damage they are doing.
The recent increased crossover to illegal opiates was triggered by the crackdown on prescriptions… do you know what percentaqge of Drs own shares in the BIG opiate corp? It is astounding… now thay all casually sachet away from prescribing those drugs, even as their hooked patients desperately turn to the black market.
The Republican’s prescription drug benefit in the early W years should have been a warning, the fact it happened the same time synthetic morphine production was being peddled to physicians as a great investment opportunity for their portfolios should have sent up red flags in every quarter. Once they unleashed their synthetics, forthose entwined physicians, it was inevitable they would become the biggest opiate dealers in history. But hindsight is always 2020. Except when we are talking about the next election.
Its great that everyone is taking about pharmaceutical opiates like oxycontin but notice how no one ever asks…where is all this really pure heroin coming from? Well, it’s straight out of Afghanistan as a direct result of our war there and our propping up of drug lords there as well as our purchase of Pakistani cooperation in the war on terror by allowing the leadership there to continue to profit from afgani opium. as I recall, the opium market accounts for nearly a quarter of the Pakistani GNP. As I recall, those nice guys we supported from the Kosovo Liberation Army are instrumental in smuggling a lot of this heroin and god only knows what role the CIA and independent operators within our armed services play in all of this.
Isn’t it funny that street heroin used to run around 5-10% pure in the 1970s and now it’s well over 50% just when all those pill addicts needed it?
