We are going to see harsher sentences that do little to deter anyone. Jeff Sessions who never saw a private prison he couldn’t profit from will be overjoyed, but the rest of the country, not so much.
I am all for taking on the Opioid crisis, but for once we have to be smart. Much more treatment. Discourage doctors from prescribing the damn things. Better prescription cross checks to keep users from prescription shopping. Drug companies need to get on board or be put out of business.

I’d point out again that Ta Nehisi Coates put his finger on it when he said that crack was a crime wave and opioids an epidemic. Once predominately affects the white community, the other those “others”.

those opium producers in Afghanistan tried to make a deal once, to go legit and stay there, to supply the market that they knew would become available, legally, through Doctor prescription, but the synthetic morphine interests shut it down. Or something like that…

Oxycodone and Hydrocodone and a bunch of other addictive drugs are made from an otherwise relatively non useful alkaloid that’s a bi -product of legitimate morphine and Codeine extraction (called Thebaine). It is also what they use to make Narcan,so you can see how profitable it is to make those drugs,and the treatment for overdoses of those drugs. The other thing is, the market already shifted to Heroin, which is still pretty damn pure,at least around here. Of course they are adding fentanyl to that (from China, and/or possibly Russia as well). What you’ll see is the media continuing to insinuate that most heroin in the US comes from Mexico,when in fact it mostly comes from our “allies” in the war on terror. mexica nheroin is opium thats been treated with an insecticide that contains; I believe, acetic anhydride because access to acetic anhydride is pretty well controlled in north America. Interstingly, the DEA claims almost all heroin in this country comes from Mexico and Columbia while the Canadian government says 90% of their heroin comes from Afganistan who in fact produce 87% of the world’s Heroin and have a potential direct smuggling path to the US provided by our military involvement here.
