Only people my age (high '70’s) remember what it was like for females before Roe v. Wade and modern contraception. When everything is comfortable people assume that situation will go on forever. They forget that rights won have to be constantly protected or they are eroded or go away altogether.
I misread the headline as “Trump to Appoint Anti-Constipation Activist” and I thought, “Yes! He always has a constipated look on his face!”
Oh, fuck off, you sanctimonious asshole. I’m not on my high horse telling a woman of color to be more understanding of people who hate me for my color and gender. That’s you. You’re here preaching to me about how I should feel about people who voted to marginalize me and people who look like me. Do you even hear yourself? Nope, you and your ilk are still having a temper tantrum because I don’t like your god Sanders. Get over yourself.
OK, I wish someone who knows more than me could answer this: Family Planning funds are administered as federal grants, by virtue of the Title X Family Planning Act passed by congress in 1970. Bear with me. From the Wiki general overview:
"The Title X Family Planning Program, officially known as Public Law 91-572 or “Population Research and Voluntary Family Planning Programs”, was enacted under President Richard Nixon in 1970 as part of the Public Health Service Act. Title X is the only federal grant program dedicated solely to providing individuals with comprehensive family planning and related preventive health services. Title X is legally designed to prioritize the needs of low-income families or uninsured people (including those who are not eligible for Medicaid) who might not otherwise have access to these health care services. These services are provided to low-income and uninsured individuals at reduced or no cost.[1] Its overall purpose is to promote positive birth outcomes and healthy families by allowing individuals to decide the number and spacing of their children. The other health services provided in Title X-funded clinics are integral in achieving this objective.[2]
Title X is administered by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Office of Population Affairs (OPA) by the Office of Family Planning (OFP). The statute and regulations of Title X require that 90 percent of congressional appropriations be used for clinical family planning purposes. In FY2010, Congress appropriated around $317 million for the Title X Family Planning program."
So if the person in charge of administering these grants, of which the congressional intent is to provide contraceptive services, fails to provide these services, shouldn’t there be some legal recourse?
I am in my high 60s but I remember what life was like right before Roe v. Wade.
There have been abortions for as long as men and women have had sex. Abortions are just going to happen. That is just a fact of life. Roe v. Wade saved lots of women from back alley butchers and coat hanger abortions. I don’t like abortions, but if I have to choose between before or after Roe v. Wade I will chose after every time.
To me the anti-contraception crowd is anti-life. They are actively encouraging coat hanger abortions or back street butchers. They really hate women.
It is such a damn shame that American women haven’t been able to either retain the memories of experiences of those who came before us or remain vigilant about the fragility of pro choice measures.
And here we are, once more unto the breach…
The point is your assumption that all the women in rural America who use contraceptive services deserve to have their services cut. Most of those women are simply trying to plan their families and survive in an increasingly difficult world. Many are innocent of sinning against you. I might be sanctimonious and an asshole, but I don’t actively hate an entire group of innocent people. You do and that is what makes you no better than the people who voted for Donald Trump.
Remember those Republicans and conservatives who were ok with Title
X.
George H.W. Bush wasn’t nicknamed “Rubbers” for nothing.
You should say that while gazing into the nearest mirror.
That is the most sanctimonious bullshit you’ve spouted in quite some time—though it’s not a surprise.
I don’t know the answer to your question but I’m wondering if Rump’s regime will push for Congress to repeal PL 91-72 thereby freeing up $317M that could be going towards the 1%.
So don’t have one. It’s a legal medical procedure, and the only discussion about it is whether you believe a woman should control her own reproductive capabilities or whether you believe the government should control those capabilities.
People who oppose abortion or contraception are saying that the government should force women to have babies.
Period.
The Clinton administration did that back in 1993. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (42 USC §2000bb) provides a claim or defense to persons whose religious exercise is substantially burdened by government.
Of course that won’t stop DT from issuing an EO so he can take credit for something he had nothing to do with.
No, just the ones who voted for exactly that! I didn’t think I needed to explain that I certainly wouldn’t want to see any such thing happen to the women in those areas who didn’t vote for their own misery. I made the mistake of assuming TPMers were smart enough to understand that. I guess I didn’t consider you post here too. My bad.
Yes, the racist and the object of their racism are exactly alike if the one affected by it has no sympathy for the racist. Brilliant logic, but it sounds better when it comes from Rush Limbaugh.
You discovered a new word. Wow. Good for you.
so I guess Ivanka failed once again in trying to whisper in her father’s ear, huh
As a former college prof, I have a working vocabulary that is roughly 5 times that of the average asshole like you.
I commented on what you posted—you returned with an ad hominem attack.
Wholly typical and expected.
Fuck off.
Eh, insulting someone’s intelligence probably isn’t a thing you should do. What, with the projection and all.
I was the Coordinator of our local Health Department based Title X funded Family Program back in the 80’s during the Reagan years. It felt like an assault because our funding levels were essentially frozen (i.e., not increased). Then there was the infamous Gag Rule regulation requiring that Title X funded pregnancy counseling services could not discuss abortion (we did a work around), which was reversed by Bill Clinton upon taking office. The guy in charge then was an OB/GYN who was quietly known to be ambivalent about contraception. But as bad as that was, there was no sense that the core mission of providing a full range of contraceptive services was at risk. This is truly uncharted territory.
No, you don’t get it. You aren’t objecting to racism. In your hatred of all rural women you are acting exactly as the racists act. There is a difference. You are simply reflecting the hatred and bigotry you feel on others, many of whom don’t deserve it. You are acting the same.
Maybe not, but Thunderclap can’t wait to jump me at every opportunity. I have the high ground here and I really don’t want to sink to his level.
