Discussion: Trump Threatens Tax On European Cars After EU Slams Steel Tariff

Time to move your 401(k) funds to very, very conservative, folks. Then, after he drives us into economic depression, transfer back to stocks.

Ford Motor company sells over 2x as many cars abroad as it does within the US. Retaliatory tariffs from the EU, China and Canada will hit Ford (and other automakers) very hard.

That would require reading or listening or thinking . . . so, no he doesn’t know that.

Yes. I’ve seen Fords all over Italy but they aren’t our kind of Fords. I’ve often remarked to my husband - goddamn I wish they’d sell these in the states.

Obama just bailed the fucking American automobile industry out and you might know he’d destroy them because of it.

“Trump’s new attack on European automakers is mostly a direct threat at Germany, which exported $23 billion in cars to the United States in 2016, according to data aggregated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. But large German automakers also have a sizable presence in the United States, with BMW employing thousands of workers in South Carolina and Volkswagen employing thousands more in Tennessee. Those manufacturers produce hundreds of thousands of cars in the United States each year, many of which are later exported to buyers in Asia and Europe.”

But then, “The U.S. imposes a 2.5 percent tariff on the import of foreign cars and a 25 percent tariff on the import of foreign trucks and commercial vans. The European Union charges a 10 percent tariff on the import of cars.” (WaPo)

Bottom line: trade is much more complicated than the Simple Simon President thinks it is.

Yes, well Bannon’s whole schtick was the construction of an anti-NATO right-wing network of European, Russian and American Fascists – and that’s why he fit with this crew of pro-Putin anti-regulation autocrats. Trying to screw around with Europe is in this White House’s DNA.

Time for desperate measures: Obama needs to address the nation with a sternly worded warning to Trump that it’s entirely un-Presidential and would be a huge mistake if Trump were to put his tongue on the third rail at the Times-Square-42nd St. subway station.

If this keeps going, it will lead to a recession in the US, which will hurt the Republicans at the polls in November. What are the Republicans doing letting Trump say stuff like this? He’s going to tank their chances if this continues, but they just go along…are they really that afraid of the crazy right wingers? They must realize their policies are bad for the nation, and fear the people finally realizing that and revolting…Trump is accelerating that process, so it make no sense for them to go along with it.

This is precisely what Putin was hoping for…Trump to divide and debase the US and its allies.

We know from records that Melania Trump and her parents are close friends with Putin and high ranking members of Slovenia’s Communist Party.

Is Trump on Putin’s payroll and basically a Russian spy?

Isn’t it time to organize non-violent Save Our Country marches on the White House, the Capitol, and Mar-a-Lago? So many of us threatened, so many of us potential good neighbors. Let there be no place to hide for Trump, Ivanka and Jared, for Nunes, Ryan and McConnell (aside from slick words no difference among them). Out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered, but alive to endure condemnation and ridicule for the rest of their lives.

I am not kidding. I am too old to organize a march, but not too old to walk in it. I want to help. Sitting on the sidelines commenting is not enough to save us. Perhaps even I can contribute a few ideas, help construct a powerful slogan or two, then lift my placard high. I promise to fly to Washington to join you and camp out until we get the job done. Can anyone doubt the Republic teeters more precariously every day? We must act now. These enemies of true freedom are at their weakest now. Seize the moment! Forward, to a country we can be proud of!

What if Bombardier doesn’t go through with their plans to spend $300 million on a new plant in Mobile, Dotard Douchebag?

Might well indeed. But I like my way. Obama’s statement would have the advantage of being true. And if Trump reacted predictably, well, let’s just say this kind of thing wouldn’t be happening over and over again any more. Plus it’s my baby and I just like the idea. I’m not a normal person, frankly.

So he’s upping the ante. Good luck with talking him down Ryan and McConnell. You got into bed with a traitorous moron and now you own this.

Taxing Bourbon and Harley-Davidson was a nice touch from our European friends.

Which means Trump has no idea of what he’s doing, his gut has no idea of what it’s feeling, and his brain has left the body. As for the words well words to do hurt, bigly.

It makes sense though - you know he loves to be contrary, with or without the added Obama. He looked right at the sun after being warned repeatedly not to so I love your idea.

It’s perfection.

It’s exactly what Putin would wish, but Trump’s been yelling this stupidity about trade for a long time. It’s one of the all subjects about which he knows nothing.

It’s standard Populism. Populists are against trade because Populism is a Nativist movement.
