Discussion: Trump: Texas Shooting Is A 'Mental Health' Issue, Not A 'Guns Situation'

Well , Trump-Trump SHOULD know - he*s mentally ill .

The man is an obscenity.
But let the Trumpian logic play out–if it is a mental health issue, would it not make a wee bit of sense to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill? Or would that cause hurt feelings?

Of course something doesn’t need to happen, the killer’s not brown and/or a Muslim.

And it’s definitely not terrorism, and the shooter wasn’t an animal.

So interesting.

If it’s a mental health issue, then he can DO SOMETHING!

No Mr. President. YOU have a mental health issue that your party is unwilling to deal with.

Dr. Trump is not only our greatest President ever and a fantastic businessman, scientist, writer, golfer and everything else, he is able to diagnose someone in Texas whom he has never met all the way from Japan, a country, by the way, where guns are virtually absent (even many yakuza don’t have them) and the mentally ill don’t walk into some place and kill by the dozens.

Best point of trumpian hypocrisy in this incident (and there is one for every incident). Dotard signed on to owning this excuse.

Yes, let’s ignore the military’s assessment of this killer. They court-martialed him for assaulting his wife and his child, they confined him for 12 months, they gave him a “bad conduct” discharge but you and your cabal are just fine with a convicted abuser owning guns and assault weapons.

Because you, you pig-eyed sack of shit, know better than anyone, including the military court system.

Why is it too soon to talk about it being a guns problem, but not too soon to talk about being a mental health problem?

And, sure, it is partially a mental health problem. So, do something about it - money and clinics for treatment…and keep guns away from people with mental health problems. Universal background checks would be a start.

But, do something about the other part of the problem, too - guns. Most things have more than one cause. You gotta work on all the factors.

So it’s a mental health issue. Trump should know, his mental health is dangerous. But why should the Texas shooter have had multiple weapons? He was violent, had been in jail. All this fine with the Trump crowd. According to Trump, people with mental health issues should have multiple weapons. Another victory for the NRA: shoot, shoot, shoot—even if it is totally innocent people in worship.

Well, let’s say that this is the intersection of mental health issues and the gun situation. So let’s say that the solution is to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. What is Trump’s solution to this problem? I’m willing to wager that it is to do nothing about either mental health issues or the gun situation. We’ll just wait for the next mass shooting and then start all over with thoughts and prayers. Soon it will be standard SMS-speak: “T&P 4 TX”. Eventually there will be a “thoughts and prayers” emoji.

Someone should ask Trump if he is going to be like Obama and do nothing about this situation. Explain to him that it’s all Obama’s fault for not taking action to counter this threat to Americans and ask if he is going to do the same. That should get him off the dime.

We can also point out that even if it were a mental health issue (it’s not, it’s a guns-in-the-hands-of-anyone-who-wants-one issue), Trump and a Republican legislature are still not going to be doing anything that would help. Access to better healthcare, or even any healthcare at all and/or increased funding toward anything that would help individuals suffering from mental health issues or that would better our society’s understanding of these types of mass killings aren’t things they’re willing to pursue.

Most people want commonsense gun control. But we don’t have it. Because more and more we don’t have self-government in this country any more. And if we want it back we’re going to have to fight for it. To the extent that I’ve stayed sane, working for the local Democratic committee has helped. If you want the Democrats to fight, be one and fight. Don’t expect others to fight for it if you won’t.

So if you’re white, psychologically “normal”, have had a bad day and feel like killing scores of people, there will be little or no obstacles to going out and finding an assault rifle.

There were good people on both sides of this massacre
