Actually, the term was used in the 19th century, in the context of the 1848 unrest and religious conflict. It was widely used by the Nazis before they seized power in 1933 to denigrate the anti-Nazi press in Germany. In those days, it was frequently joined with the term “Judenpresse” or “Jewish press.” During the Nazi regime “Lügenpresse” was typically used to designate foreign press, most typically news from London. Now, it is the favored term of PEGIDA and other far-right groups. Detalis here (for those who read German):

I won’t be impressed until there’s video of a Trumper rattling off Arrow Cross slogans in the original Hungarian.

Machen Trump Drumpf aufs Neue!

“I see ‘lying press’ and ‘Lügenpresse’ all over the place,” white nationalist and alt-right leader Richard Spencer told Gray. “It’s typical Alt Right: serious… ironic… and with a sly reference to boot.”

Wait a second here, Mike Pence stated that Donald Trump told him that he doesn’t know or associate with any of these people. (partial sarcasm)

These stupid pissants think that’s a sly reference? That’s why I hate Illinois nazis.

A sly reference would be saying that this twit didn’t even miss a career as a bad landscape painter.

Curiously, the word for Trump supporters is the same in German as in English: dingleberries.
