Discussion: Trump Predicts GOP Will Do 'Very Well' In Midterm Elections

Compared to what will happen to him in 2020?

Yeah, I guess so…

Very often, when he’s trying to conjure some sort of happy talk out of thin air, when he just can’t think of an irrelevant fact to point to and his ability to simply make up a lie fails him, he talks about the tremendous, unprecedented-in-history “spirit” he sees. He often adds that he sees volcanic levels of “enthusiasm” as well.

Trump is sort of a 'grift is always greener on the other side"…

Also he thinks you look great in that car. It’s just you. Have you ever done film work? He was just wondering.

I’m surprised he said “very well” and not “very good”. Or, even better, “very big”.

When you think about it, coming in second in a number of key races could be thought of a doing very well.

I agree with what you said. In this case however, I am nervous. Not that the reality is they are doing well. But in the feeling like there is a fix about to be applied. Kush, Bolton and Trump could come off as framing Trump’s prediction ahead of time to create what may seem a plausible series of wins despite what seems to be forming. Again, I am worried it will roll left as expected and then someone suddenly turns the dial to the right.

And his new suit of clothes will be ready the day before the midterms.

How?

May the GOP post-election slogan be “I finished second while my opponent came in next to last.”

Good question. Considering the willful ignoring of Russia’s manipulating the past election, the obvious and blatant voter suppression tactics currently, I do not see the Republicans of today having any moral or ethical compunction not to allow further dirty tricks. I have yet to believe that something was not tweaked during the 2016. The flip was too dramatic to leave me comfortable that it was not manipulation. And it seemed to happen just right to allow an electoral win. I will likely go to my grave or container of choice not feeling that was a real win. And I see no reason it cannot happen again. Consider it my one deep conspiracy theory hat to wear, but it is what it is.

I do think Russian deza was a factor in 2016. It would be reckless to not assume that. But they targeted close races and managed, maybe, to add some votes. They can’t just punch in whatever result they want, though. And this time, whatever perfidy you think the GOP might pull, it’s going to happen under a spotlight. I continue to have every reason to think that if we vote, we win. Call me crazy. : )

Now I am curious as to why you think they cannot?

Thankfully

Honestly, I think they’ve done all they can do at this point. Russia has the president Putin wanted. They’ve done all the gerrymandering they can do and they have implemented all the voter suppression tactics they can. And now it looks as though they’re still going to lose horribly. That’s where the real panic is coming from. Despite everything they’ve done to rig the election they’re still going to lose. More importantly, they’re going to lose at a time that will have grave reverberating consequences for years to come.

I guess it depends on what he means by very and well.

Because the existing safeguards, while not nearly a guarantee, militate against its being a cakewalk. The Trump administration isn’t to be trusted with this and hasn’t helped at all, but they’re not the only or primary players. Are you aware of much ballot-tampering fostered and permitted by any state or municipal election commissions? I know people will say oooh you’re so naive, because we reward maximal if irrational cynicism here, but to be honest I haven’t heard tell of much of it.

I hear ya, but I give the credit to the FBI.

I really do not want to contribute to anxiety. I have tried to back off of that lately and stay up. But I am being pragmatic as well. When Trump started suggesting he would contest a loss, he was signaling something that was actually pretty dirty in my view. It was a form of suppression, hey we all know he is going to lose right? Now he has bounced from one statement to another. Why? He has been pushing the line that he is not responsible for a Republican rout. Now suddenly we see Trump and Kush acting as if it is likely the Republican’s will be fine? Black Swan my ass. (excuse me, honest reaction) This is the one thing that makes me uncomfortable. I am not saying what we are seeing in terms of a Blue Wave is not, I think really it is. It is incredibly encouraging. But in the idea of things being manipulated, I am not as assured.

I see your point, but here’s the thing…Don’t read so much into what these people are saying. Of course, Kushner is going to say “don’t bet against him.” It’s actually a fairly weak answer to a direct question about whether or not Democrats are going to beat them. I wouldn’t expect him or anyone on the R side to say, “Yeah, we’re probably gonna lose badly.” And PP himself? That guy just says things. He spouts off and says things whether or not they’re based in anything resembling fact or data. Tomorrow afternoon he may just go back to blaming his party. It doesn’t mean anything.
