The Brighton Beach community is probably happier than punch and fairly comfortable with the tRumps in the White House. That’s where Russian organized crime formed and thrived for many years (probably still does). There are lots of ethnic Russians and Russian Jews in NY and NJ, more so than anywhere else in the country. A lot of the early wave Soviet era refuseniks, mostly Jews, came to the US in the 70’s after plenty of complaints by human rights activists. Many of them were allowed to emigrate to Israel by the USSR, but a bunch preferred to move here. The US now has more Russian Jews than in Israel, I think. Most Russian Jews are secular as they came out of the Soviet system that made following one’s religion a crime. The ultra-Orthodox Jews from Russian speaking countries arrived here many years earlier in the first half of the last century. In the 90’s the Russian population grew even more, as a second wave of Russian immigrants came here. That included many more Christians this time but still plenty of Jewish families found their way here and made the US their home. It was really in the 90’s that the Russian mob became an international operation with many tentacles into many different kinds of business opportunities. That’s how the mob became associated with the Russian oligarchs, who inherited some of the former Soviet Unions major companies when they were privatized and given to favored individuals on the cheap.

Meanwhile our Head of State plays make believe fireman. It’s depressing really. “Fire truck vroom vroon!! Me go out out fire…become famous fireman!!”
My grandson was excited to be in a fire truck, but he was 3!
