Discussion: Trump: My Life Hasn't Been 'Easy,' My Dad Gave Me Million Dollar Loan

Discussion for article #242159

You know, a million dollars in 1971 would be worth almost six million today, adjusted for inflation.

A man ā€œof the people (the 1 %)ā€

A true man of the people, that guy! Right up with Mitt Romneyā€™s advice to young people to ask their parents for that loan to start their own business. Oh, and work hard. Thatā€™s how we did it.

Only a million dollars from his father. Man, thatā€™s a rough start in life.

Typical Republican ā€“ born on third base, Dad hits a sacrifice fly, Trump jogs to home plate, thinkā€™s heā€™s hit a home run.

My own life isnā€™t so easy right nowā€”my coffee got cold, and my throatā€™s been scratchy for the past couple of days. But I laughed out loud at this one, I really did. Thank you Donald, from me personally, and from every Democrat-leaning voter in the land, thank you for these remarks.

Donald, I beg you. Donā€™t tell us the story about how you and Ivanka made tuna casserole and ate if off an ironing board in a $62. a month basement apartment. The other rich guy already trotted out this story and it didnā€™t work for him.

We should take pity on The Donald; a million dollars isnā€™t what it used to be.

Oh, fuck this shit. You know what I could do with a million dollars in the bank? Is this supposed to be the tRump version of his Horatio Alger backstory? I think everyone knows that any money he was given from family wasnā€™t on the basis of a loan. That was most likely only a small part of a trust fund, along with eventually inheriting a multi-million dollar real estate business from dear old dad. I canā€™t believe anyone believes anything that comes out of this guyā€™s mouth.

He talks a lot and still, actually says nothing.

First, I didnā€™t think it would be possible to out-douche the Romney, name dropping NFL and NASCAR franchise owners he knows. Second, The Rump would be richer today if heā€™d parked the money in an index fund. Talk about a sorry excuse for seriously underperforming the market.

Ok, it might have been 2 million dollars. The point is that it was really no money at all.

His whole shtick is infantile, immature and grotesquely self-serving.

Trump inherited 200 million and 1000ā€™s of rental properties from his father. By all estimates heā€™d be worth much more if heā€™d passively invested his wealth and made modest returns.

Heā€™s an ignoramus grifter.

Perhaps Trump will tell us how many times his businesses declared bankruptcy, how mush his creditors lost, and how did he end up richer than ever. Using other peopleā€™s money???

The funny thing is, if he had a modicum of empathy and was more articulate, he could say yes, of course he was fortunate but real estate development is a tough game, it takes a variety of qualities. You do need a lot of capital, actually, and the process is complex with a variety of hurdles to get over at every stage. The story of the Grand Hyatt has aspects he could actually use to make his case. But no, heā€™s a thoughtless ape and habitual crybaby, so this is how it all comes out. Heā€™s good at getting attention, but the real politicians Iā€™ve known, the kind who spend a life shaking hands at ribbon-cuttings and stuff like that, are usually better natural communicators.

Wish I coulda had a ā€œsmall loanā€ at certain times in my life. Like when I was 28 and living out of my pick up truck. And I wouldnā€™t have needed a million dollars either. But I was prideful at that age and wanted nobodyā€™s help. I was basically homeless. Yes a million dollars is small chump change to Trump ā€¦relatively to what he has built but I betā€™cha heā€™s got no idea what being homeless and no job feels like.
Iā€™m comfortably retired now but I remember.

As a Yorkshireman, I can confirm that this is pretty much a documentary.

From Alternet:

ā€œā€"ā€œTrump was born in New York City in 1946, the son of real estate tycoon Fred Trump. Fred Trumpā€™s business success not only provided Donald Trump with a posh youth of private schools and economic security but eventually blessed him with an inheritance worth an estimated $40 million to $200 million.Jul 9, 2012"ā€"

Thatā€™s how it was. Note how divorced from reality Trump isā€¦incapable of seeing himself as he is. Heā€™ll be that was as a POTUS too.

More like a ground-out to first.
