There is a three part Trump MO on all his signature issues. First, he puts out the basic, inflammatory hardline position, which excites his constituency. Second, he backs off that hardline position by creating exceptions when he gets specific questions about the hardline position from the press, which makes it much harder to pin him down. And third, when he gets pushed even harder, he describes the hard line position as a temporary measure, necessary because America’s stupid leaders have let a critical problem go unresolved. He did this first with the Hispanic deportation policy. Now, he is doing it with Muslim immigration and deportation. And I think that despite the questioning from the press he is pretty much getting away with it. I think he basically won the debates this morning with Chris Cuomo and the Joe/Mica show, taking all of them down the rabbit hole of Paris, rather than keeping the argument on his proposal.

Trump is narcissistic opportunist. He has no interest in policy.
When asked by MSNBC’s Geist how he would implement his plan at the border, Trump suggested he would exempt athletes from his ban.
“There’s certainly going to be exceptions made, like for instance, sporting events and other things,” Trump said.
Wasn’t he just wondering aloud if there were any Muslim athletes?
Ohhhhh… I get it. Pretty sneaky, The Donald.

Has anyone asked Der Donald how he would tell who is a Muslim. There are Muslims from non-Muslim countries; some might have names that aren’t obviously Muslim to an American. There are also non-Muslims from many Muslim countries.
I hear tomorrow, Trump will roll out his plan to cure cancer by the end of his first year in office. You want details? Sorry, details are for losers.

It’s too bad this policy wasn’t in place before the San Bernardino shooting. “If a person is a Muslim, goes overseas and comes back, they can come back. They’re a citizen.” Oh wait a second…

This is actualy pretty easy.
You ask someone if they are a witch muslim and if they say no, then they are obviously lying.
Also, too, I hear that even after all these centuries, yellow cloth emblems worn on clothing are still the most cost effective way to go, so stars, crescents, what ever works for you.
That’s absolutely how it goes, but the question in my mind is whether there’s some cleverness to the three-partedness or whether he’s just garnering bad attention like a spoiled 4-year-old and then backpedaling in order to keep the conversation going with journalists and such. You take Cruz, he knows to couch his red meat in ways that won’t be too noxious for the general election. Trump’s not smart enough to do that in the first place, and I honestly wonder whether he really thinks his follow-up equivocations will help with that. I think he’s just doing what a salesman does, after he messes up he keeps talking, trying to fix things. Basically I assume he’s always improvising with some very crude tools and he’s much less clever than he gets credit for.

Plan? He has no plan. Everything he does is improvised. He’s got guys for that deportation thing. The best, OK? He’ll hire the best people to deport the Muslims. It’s all about management. He’s really good at picking the right people, as he reminds his crowds at every opportunity.

I agree. The fact is you don’t have to be clever to play to people’s fears and prejudices. It’s a completely obvious and crude strategy. It’s just that most people–even Republicans–have some scruples about doing it as unreservedly as Trump.
