Discussion: Trump Insists His Proposed Muslim Ban Has 'Nothing To Do With Religion'

Discussion for article #243613

Right. It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with stoking homicidal hatred and pants-wetting fear of “brown people.”

“To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself – that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.” - Orwell, 1984

Really…what other response is there?

“It’s not about religion; it’s about safety.” This is a wonderful inanity that makes zero sense. If Trump’s position truly had nothing to do with religion, his minions would be out combing the countryside, looking for bunkers holding 7,000 rounds of ammunition, 15 semiauto assault rifles and a dozen boxes of C4. But no one is going to look for those gun-happy bozos – they get a pass, while people with brown skin will be held against their will, questioned about their family background going back seven generations, and slandered beyond reason.

Is he as glib with the second amendment as he is with the first?

Oh…I saw that argument being pushed last night by right wingers. Islam isn’t a religion, its a political movement. They call it “Islamism”, and try to make some weird distinction between Muslims and Islamists.

It makes my head hurt too much to follow those conversations too closely.

Time magazine had a piece on how Trump’s narcissism is atypical in that he isn’t, as they delicately put it, quick-witted. Most narcissists are, it seems, and he’s not, as I think we’re all seeing. If you propose to ban visits to the U.S. by people of a certain religion, you can’t say it has nothing to do with religion. It pretty clearly seems, at least to those whose wits are quicker than Trump’s, to have something to do with religion—religion is the only factor involved.

And again, maybe I’m not quick-witted myself, but unless I’m missing something it seems a bit slow-witted to base your big plan to ensure a country’s safety on fucking well asking people coming in if they’re Muslims or not. The flaw in the plan is that the nefarious harm-intending Muslim might be enough of a criminal mastermind to say “No” and be waved on in. Again, I may be missing something and I’m not a Wharton grad so my inferior intellect has not equipped me to grasp the obvious soundness of this plan.

Meanwhile, the criminal cases against Christianist terrorists Robert Dear and Dylan Roof continue without anyone demanding that we stop letting Christians into the country.

It might take doublethink to support him, but to be him, probably not. Most of the time he’s not even managing singlethink.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Wednesday that his proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States has “nothing to do with religion,” despite saying a day earlier that his plan would involve customs agents asking travelers whether they were Muslim.

Muslim: Someone who follows the religion of Islam.

Wa…wait. I’m confused.
He is ACTUALLY SAYING OUT LOUD that a “Religious Test to Enter the US” has nothing to do with Religion.?!?!?!?!?!
May I be one of many to say; WTF?

One thing that is different from most narcissists is that we are actually seeing something sort-of-rare, that is unchecked narcissism. Most of us are familiar with these sorts of people, and that they exist is not surprising. What is unusual about Trump is that there is no modifying factor, a parent, a trusted friend, a political party, the press. People in actual life are constrained from becoming the assholes they could be because of normal life circumstance. Trump is completely un-constrained from any such authority, and he really should be studied.

Money. Check out John du Pont, crazy guy extraordinaire who ended up murdering somebody because he went crazier and crazier and because of his money nobody in his life had the power to do anything about it.

What now?!

Let us not forget that John Bush the Acronym ¿Jeb?'s proposal was more extreme than Trump’s. John Bush said that immigration should be limited to christians. He also said that it was easy to tell who was christian.

Trump has nothing to do with religion or common decency. So I’m sure he feels his ban has nothing to do with their religion. Much in the same way Hitler rationalized his stand against Jews. He told everyone they were dangerous and needed to be kept away from the general population. Same argument. Same depraved, unholy reasoning.

It’s so highly ironic that Trump says Merkel is ruining Germany.

Yes it’s probably not as rare as I think, the rich do make their own worlds.

This is indicative of how irrelevant Jeb ! has become in this race. He’s just as horrible if not more racist than Trump but nobody cares.
