Discussion: Trump DOJ Could Effectively Be Reviving A Long-Term Attack On Voting Rights

Would their be any individual legal ramification to Census responders to simply leaving the question blank?

I know GOP would love if all Dems refused to answer because then they could be stripped of equal representation.

One need only read about this Administration’s latest effort to suppress minorities to fully understand the ongoing protests by football players and a growing number of others at the playing of the National Anthem. “Land of the free?” Yea, so long as your skin is of a pale complexion.

However, should the Trump Justice Department get its way in a new push to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census, it could breathe new life into the effort. The result could be that some states draw their legislative districts in ways that reduce the voting power of minority communities and boost the power of white ones

So essentially this says that legal residents who are not US citizens do not warrant representation in Washington, and even as residents, they are effectively not constituents within their Representative’s district? Do i have that right? How does this not help to undo all that made America great to begin with?

It ain’t just white people, some of us are Democrats.

Pot “entrepreneurs” are turning to money laundering because they have so much cash and banks can’t take it.

sales in the United States will more than double to roughly $21 billion by 2021 from nearly $9 billion last year.

It’s so goddamn stupid.

And what’s more most people know it’s stupid. There are some very adamantly anti-pot legalization Americans, but they’re the minority and have been for at least 10 years.

Texas has okayed grow sites for medical.

And you haven’t even gotten your hands yet on the sequel to that book, Fire and Fury. Just wait until you’ve read that!

The Republicans should just drop all the pretense and declare that only WHITE LAND-OWNING MALES can vote, just like the (not-yet-ratified) Constitution stated in 1788.
Of course that ignores 200+ years of amendments, but who cares as long as they WIN (in their minds.)
They really, REALLY want to drop every single Constitutional Amendment after the 12th and go back to the “Good Old Days” of 1840.
They especially hate the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 24th, and 26th amendments.
You know. Pretty much everything that dilutes the voting power of Older White Males (and allows the Federal Government to collect Income Taxes.)

Number 14 in “The 14 Points of Fascism!”
14. Fraudulent Elections: Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

My very conservative mom was pro-legalization 10 years ago, when she was in her mid-70s.

Yep, the republicans only care about accurate numbers when it benefits their agenda.

First, the Census Bureau would have decide whether to grant the Justice Department’s citizenship question request, which is coming incredibly late in the planning process and as the bureau is facing an assortment of other hurdles in implementing an accurate count.

Haven’t they been cutting the Census Bureau’s budget? Then they’re all like, “oh yeah, can you do us a last minute favor?” Jerks.

Our elected representatives represent all the population in a district and not just people of voting age or citizens. This is absolute fucking bullshit.

I see what your saying, but I think the issue here is that large areas favoring Democrats end up getting fewer districts which reduces their overall power in the congress. Otherwise, Ed Blum wouldn’t be fighting it so hard.

“But the report also caught the eye of Ed Blum, a conservative legal activist who in 2014 spearheaded a case seeking to end the use of census total population data to draw state legislative districts. The lawsuit, Evenwel v. Abbott, asked the court to invalidate state legislative maps drawn based on total population. The challengers argued that gave too much weight to areas with large numbers of non-citizens.”

As a simple example, say you have an area with 200.000 people, but only 150,000 are citizens. Say your district is based on 100.000 census. Under the proposed rules, 2 districts now become one and a half.

I’ve been asking myself that every day since Jan '17.

I’m afraid this is going to be a very long year.

It probably is, but not one that can be prosecuted.

But people don’t have to lie. They can just refuse to respond to the question.

But before that, people should write to their congressional representatives, Republican or Democrat, telling them to oppose the idea. Republicans in states like California, New York, Arizona and Colorado know that opposition from Latino voters could doom their hopes for holding their seats.
