Somebody wrote it: Trump either changes his message to fit the audience or changes his audience to fit the message. His NPD means he needs adulation, so he went somewhere he knew he’d get applause and gave 'em what they wanted to hear to get his fix.

The protective pool is essentially a protection for the President. It limits the number of reporters who follow him around. The media outlets know they will not be scooped on anything major that comes up. Without it he will be staked out by hundreds of reporters each tiring to get a jump in the others,
