If I remember a 5 year route to citizenship is/was available to Cubans, anyone from old iron curtain countries and probably anyone whose skin is the lighter shade of pale. Is it only Hispanics that are unqualified for such benevolence?

The strategy I see from Trump/Sessions is to avoid the courts, despite their rhetoric to the contrary. He’s muddying the waters because it’s a little unclear to me how a lawsuit would be filed. He has passed the buck to Congress and it seems that Trump is simply not renewing a program, not just abrogating a promise mid-stream. It makes for a little tougher target to hit. I’m sure a legal expert can figure a way out, but if DACA is term-limited and the gov’t chooses not to extend and throws in some nat sec bullshit, then it makes it a little harder to pin them down.

If, however, Congress acts to protect Dreamers, I don’t think Trump will stand in the way. He will fold. His whole thing is that he doesn’t want blame or cost for any action. That was his approach on HC as well. It was also his approach on Russia. He offered Comey a deal: ‘screw any of my aides and family over but exonerate me’.

So, we have some leverage here now as Democrats. We have to make this a real issue.

The program was ALWAYS limited. “DEFERRED ACTION” - right in the title. Action - deportation. Deferred - pushed off to later.

And as to Congress doing something, they might. Cotton has indicated that this might be folded into his immigration bill. If they cut legal immigration by 50%, ended chain migration, and increased the deportation of illegals by increasing the immigration judges, that might be OK. But there would have to be a huge increase in deportations and a huge decrease in legal immigration. But that’s politics. Compromise. You get the dreamers, we get to boot out their parents and end chain migration.

No! Some Dreamers are from Asia. Probably some are from Europe, too. And, of course, Africa. This is color-blind bigotry.

I grant you all that. I’ll even concede that Sessions may have the edge. And we haven’t even reached peak Sessions yet. Tell you what – come back when Sessions comes up for sentencing and we’ll see who the winner is.

I just hope congressional democrats keep a stiff spine and vote against any DACA replacement that has any of Trump’s priorities like the wall attached.
