Discussion: Trump, Carrier To Announce Deal To Keep Some Jobs In Indiana

They’re essentially paying Carrier to keep half of the jobs here…NOT EVEN ALL OF THEM.

My fear is that he will brag about this drop-in-the -bucket fix endlessly while the economy as a whole starts going down the drain, and he still gets off,and is thought of as some kind of a hero,.

So the taxpayers of Indiana get to fork over $65 million a year to Carrier? Does the State of Indiana raise taxes or cut social services to pay for this?

Right you are. Trump is going to be selling this hard, what a great deal this is and how he saved 1,000 American jobs in the Heartland. And watch the Trump Team bury the details for as long as they can, till their ‘victory’ receives max exposure.

Every decent journalist out there has to get those details ASAP because the details will determine whether this is a ‘good’ deal or not. In the good old days when Walmart was coming to town the state not only offered say a 10 year tax abatement (which is standard stuff) but they would also sweeten the deal by offering Walmart to keep the sales tax revenue Walmart generated on purchases, effectively selling future revenues to land Walmart as an employer today.

Let’s see how much revenue Indiana will give up to keep some of these jobs, how much of a cut in hourly wage/overtime/benefits Carrier employees will lose, and what additional corporate breaks Carrier will get.

Now if Trump kaboshes the Iran Deal that will kill a $35 Billion (with a B) dollar deal for 100 aircraft that Boeing is negotiating with Iran. Pratt and Whitney (a subsidiary of United Technologies owners of Carrier) will lose orders for hundreds of aircraft engines and thousands of high tech jobs.
Stay tuned.

Funny, reading letters in the local rag yesterday - comments about a story on the protests for raising the minimum wage.
The editors opened it up to Facebook comments and there were hundreds saying “those people” should get an education and find a better job, get a second job, etc. Most relevant to the case at hand, some were saying “who’s gonna pay $8 for a Big Mac?” - which begs the question which of them is going to pay double the price for an air conditioner to keep a factory in Indiana?

Not just the taxpayers of Indiana. United Technologies is a large government defense contractor. They own Carrier. They will get a sweet defense deal down the road. We’ll all pay.

God forbid Bernie Sanders had proposed these taxpayer funded “job saving” moves.
He’d be accused of socialism!

So much bread and circuses. And there really isn’t a more apt description of what we’ve been seeing to date and are bound to see endlessly in the future:

Bread and Circuses:

“Bread and circuses” is metonymic for a superficial means of appeasement. In the case of politics, the phrase is used to describe the generation of public approval, not through exemplary or excellent public service or public policy, but through diversion; distraction; or the mere satisfaction of the immediate, shallow requirements of a populace, as an offered “palliative.”

Very true–but it was Obama’s fault, unfortunately. He completely misunderstood the communications warfare that the presidency requires these days–no doubt because he thought it would be ‘divisive.’ Just as he constantly referred to “Congress” being a problem when it was purely a case of “Republican obstructionism.”
Dems. have for years been way too nonpartisan about their accomplishments and the misdeeds of their sworn enemies.

I’m going to throw up.

You gotta love the MO Repulbicans railing against the Iran Deal and their vow to end sending “terrorists more MO dollars” while touting that Boeing is adding jobs to make airliners for Iran. And Boeing getting to keep employee taxes to boot.
