Isn’t the real problem the decision of the Dotard and Stephen Miller to criminalize asylum seekers? If they were dealt with civilly, they wouldn’t have to be detained. I’m not seeing much discussion of this in the mystical invoking of the law.

There also seems to be a sprinkling of battered wife syndrome at work here. Some followers know deep down that he’s abusive, will cause them harm. Yet they just cannot quit him. They love him. He will commit horrible acts of psychological, economic and physical violence –or direct others to do so on his behalf. But they stay with him anyway.
Trump’s “fixing” of the child separation policy is like a thief declaring he will keep his loot he already took but not steal again.
Every time he pulls these things, he loses support. Given how unpopular the idea of taking children from their parents is, this week he’s lost a lot of support. Not necessarily turned supporters into opponents, although some of that has surely happened, but making people who have backed him less enthusiastic, and fed doubts that they’ve always had.

This may work to mollify the most rabid Trumpanzees, for a while. Soon, however, it’s going to dawn on them that Trump’s EO together with his zero-tolerance policy amounts to just “catch and release” dressed up with some harsh sounding rhetoric.
The administration will have to start releasing families with children very soon. There’s nothing else they can do without violating a consent decree, prompting a blizzard of injunctions and ultimately provoking a constitutional crisis at a time when Trump is already on thin ice due to criminal investigations in DC and NY.
When Trump starts releasing large numbers of illegal immigrants and Anne Coulter starts howling about his betrayal it’s going to hurt hum politically. Trump can mitigate the political damage from his humiliating climb down by crowing about an imaginary win, but there will be damage.
