Discussion: Trump Admin Will Pay Nonprofit Half Billion Dollars In 2018 To House Migrant Kids

Obscene.

There is nothing about this administration that is not grotesque and absent of any humanity.

Give me a break. We’re supposed to believe that congressional republicans will vote for this? Money?!? For feeding and housing immigrant children??

Maybe I misread the article. There must have been something in there about trump telling his congresscowards that Mexico will be paying for it.

How long before we learn that “Southwest Key Programs” was created 2 months ago, currently has a staff of two, and this is a no-bid contract?

I’m sure this will work just as well as a sheriff’s food fund for prisoners - feature. Follow the money back into Trump family pockets.

Leave it to Trump’s GOP to monetize misery.

Some enterprising journalist needs to investigate the “non-profit” that is profiting handsomely off this crisis. I bet if they do they will find a flow of money to the Trumps or maybe Jeff Sessions.

I wish Bloomberg had mentioned what this non-profit’s regular budget is. Seems ripe for corruption to dump that much money on an org if they have been working at a much smaller scale.

Was this money already approved as “border security”? What companies are behind the non profit…KBR/Halliburton? All part of our wonderful prison industrial complex. And of course for the GOP, cost is more than leaving kids w family. Feature not bug. GOP can be super evil, and make a profit too…

“And by ‘non-profit,’ of course we mean ‘Trumpian money-washing operation.’”

will be paid almost half a billion dollars this year by the Trump administration

Keep a close eye on this. The fuckers are going to take the money from FEMA or housing subsidies, and will, one way or another, skim off the top.

This policy is a recipe for creating terrorists.

Can we please stop referring to these things in terms like “tent city” facilities?

They are internment camps and as soon as a child inevitably perishes in one, they will be death camps. Let’s not bandy cheap euphemisms in the face of an atrocity.

This organization has been around since 1987. The Obama administration also used them to help with housing unaccompanied minors. They appear to be a legitimate, well-regarded outfit.

But they’ll be overwhelmed by what’s happening now, and - like everyone else who has ever fallen into Trump’s orbit - they’ll be soiled and diminished by the contact.

That’s about the same as the entire US foreign aid to Honduras before Trump threatened to pull it. You could build a thousand schools for that price.

I am not opposed to this IN THEORY. The problem is we are one more time throwing money at a problem instead of having a comprehensive immigration policy. We are paying Congress a great deal of money to come up with a plan that we can all live with. The Cons, who were governing (or at least in power) under Obama whined and sniveled about HIS plan although he as deporting at the border and less and less illegal immigrants were getting through. The Cons insisted he wasn’t doing ENOUGH while Dems opposed the policy as doing too much deporting and not enough fixing. What is egregious is not ONLY are they willing to spend half billion dollars on THIS but this ‘plan’ they are hatching funds Trump’s Wall. WTF? STOP throwing money away and do your job Congress. Trump’s ranting and raving is NOT a policy or a law or really ANYTHING.

My understanding from some NPR research yesterday is that they’ve been around for quite a while providing support services for kids entangled in the immigration / justice systems and are a major employer in Brownsville. They were there, have relevant experience and contracts in place to be assigned this additional service. As for the quality of service, it sounds like on a local scale they do a reasonably good job given the essentially ambivalent nature of the work, but this chaotic emergency created by Trump may be too much, too fast and too stupid for the results to be without a lot of irretrievable mistakes.

I read that some of the kids are being taken to facilities in Michigan run by Bethany Christian Services. Which I googled and saw an interview with a Brian DeVos who was listed as a senior VP. Wondering about all of that…
