Discussion: Treasury Secretary Asks Congress To Act To Avert Debt Ceiling Crisis

The leadership have already shown they’re not actually willing to default. That won’t stop them making wild demands and insisting they absolutely will default if they don’t get their demands, etc., etc., leading to a last-second resolution that damages economic confidence and our global standing.

Damaging things is the only thing the GOP knows how to do anymore. The only plus side is that they’re also damaging themselves in the process.

Imagine, just for a moment, if the GOP had succeeded in implementing term limits for the House and Senate. None of these ‘True Patriots’ would know how the legislative process works and would have to depend entirely upon staffers. Unelected, revolving door, never in what little media remains, shadow government.

Those stockholders and those few are one and the same…funny how that works, eh?

Republicans need to lift the debt ceiling to pay for the past 4 years of Republican spending.

“Without controversy or brinksmanship.” Not a chance. That’s what dirtbag republicans live for. Plenty of face time with the cameras and a great fundraising opportunity.

Oh boy more brinksmanship. Goody
Let’s shut 'er down again …this is sooooo entertaining (facepalm)

Here it comes… another example of republican governance.

I’m just trying to figure out how they can pull off option 1 without leadership coming up with a way to have the Howler Caucus out of town while still maintaining a quorum.

Thanks for that image of the ugliest man in government. Eww.

When I see someone like Andrea Mitchell and she is referred to as a “correspondent”, I think about the correspondence of two pen-pals, one pal named Rich Politician and the other Rich Enabler.

Lew is Obama’s appointee,

So the answer is — Not only NO , but HELL no!

Are you kidding me?? These gopers are already feeling the twinges in the boxers for another chance to look like there saving the country from the bad black man.
But then again, it would be funny to see mcturtle slap around bonehead a little just before Pelosi kicks his rooster up to his adams apple. lol
same drama, different day as always.

They’ll promise the Howler Caucus (really like that one) a vote on repealing President Obama or something that doesn’t stand a chance of passing the Senate, let alone being signed by the president. The Howler Caucus will be thrilled to get to vote on whatever idiotic measure Boehner comes up with and they’ll agree to let the debt ceiling raise without making much fuss. McConnell, on the other hand, will grudgingly bring it to the Senate knowing damn well that whatever it is will put several of his senators in trouble no matter how they vote on it.

I expect to see some version of this dynamic play out over and over again. If that is the case, the cold war between the House and Senate will become mortal combat. Those Senate Republicans up for reelection in 2016 are going to get tired of being forced to take positions that protect them against a primary challenge but damage their chances in the general and vice versa.

Sounds about right (a bill making Clinton’s email system retroactively illegal should work). And yeah, we’re likely to see it repeated over and over, as long as the Howlers keep lunging for whatever scraps of red meat Boehner throws at them. Watching McConnell silently curse having the thing he wished for could be very satisfying.

The shameless can not be shamed. There is no ethical remedy for the unethical.
Pointing out the damage that will be done has the reverse effect of exciting the, tear it all down, teabaggers.
These are people that enjoy self-inflicted wounds as much as hurting others.

Wasting tax dollars is their favorite game, the money would go to help the less fortunate after all and they won’t be having any of that.

Tax and shut down conservatives, that’s the new meme.

I never, ever thought I’d be typing these words, but I’ll go ahead and say it: I’m almost glad Republicans are in control of the Senate. Now, I know I’ll be singing a different tune when it comes to the Farm Bill and SNAP benefits and future budgets, but right now I’m just enjoying the hell out of watching them failing so gloriously and at doing the most simple, mundane tasks of running government. It was one thing for them to point and say, “Democrats control the Senate and the presidency, it’s not our fault we can’t get anything done”. As BS as that argument was it was still effective with the average voter, but in 2016 they’ll be fresh out of credible excuses for having accomplished nothing.
Oh, and I’m also loving the hell out of seeing my senior Senator’s legacy circle the drain and I do hope Obama and HRC are out on the campaign trail next year saying, “Let’s make Mitch McConnell a one term Majority Leader”.

9 days and counting, the crisis has already begun especially sine Boener and his crew won’t be working on this for most of those days.
McConnell will cave quickly now that his name is at the top.

Here’s the scenario; Boener says he’ll fight jug and jigger to halt President Obama’s job saving/creating spending and swear that he won’t budge until the Senate does his job for him and until President Obama repeals his entire Presidency. The teabaggers will threaten Boener with teabaggings galore if he even thinks about caving which he is already of course and Ted Cruz will grandstand about the power of sticking it out as he bails without any responsibility whatsoever.
President Obama will do a few light-hearted speeches and get in some laughs at his supposed rivals as he waits for his win, AKA their fold. Nancy Pelosi will lead John Boener and use small words to explain to him his actual job and remind him that his tail is before his snout.
Network news will go apoplectic because Hillary’s emails aren’t revealing the truth and somehow the Democrats have managed to cover it all up by starting another government shutdown, crisis, scare, intended to save the floundering Hillary campaign that they wish would start so they could get to help sink it.
Then, BOOM, the debt ceiling will be adjusted like always and the scandalous reporting will resume. A few billion tax dollars will just disappear and some southern Senator will allude to the funding of certain people that certainly don’t need it because they already have cable and shit.
Kiss March goodbye and say hello to not governing in the springtime.

Well depends on when and how you define “technically”. Borrowing authority (which is what needs to be raised) expires next week. The money fully runs out in the fall and things start shutting down, defaulting in October IIRC.

Heh.

Not sure why you are giving them ideas, but it did make me chuckle.

C’mon, you don’t think it’d be fun watching them explain how they’re voting to make something she did that was fine not-fine? Having them literally act out what they usually just do via spin and propaganda? I was just snarking, of course, but now that I think of it…; )

The request by Lew that they avoid the usual side show and histrionics makes certain they will drag out the process for as long as possible
