Discussion for article #234047
Jack Lew does his job by asking Congress to do its job. GOP/Teatrolls in Congress refuse. Story at 11.
Apparently, Lew didn’t get the memo about last months jobs report and the unemployment rate falling, or maybe he did and just doesn’t understand that it was a giant red flag to the GOP/Teatrolls that they need to re-up their shenanigans to damage the economy.
Yeah, this’ll go smoothly and without unnecessary drama.
The drama is completely necessary. For the Republicans. It’s the only way they can get the attention their sociapathetic little minds think they deserve.
How dare the Secretary of Money Printing, Hyperinflation and Dollar Debasement ask these patriots to NOT do their duty.
They love America so much that they are willing to destroy it to…
In the words of Solicitor General Verilli: “This congress, your honor?”
Seriously, what are the odds that this doesn’t become a crisis?
If the Republicans cause another crisis, it will be no one’s fault but the Democrats. The opportunity for crisis is an attractive nuisance that Republicans can’t be expected to ignore.
…and tell their constituents they are really doing something
Here we go again.
The sad part is that the Sec has had to explain to the morons that would hold this discussion hostage exactly what the debt ceiling is. Nothing to do with what they want to stop (which is new spending), but everything to do with the spending they’ve already authorized.
Because, you know, the guy in the WH is entirely to blame for how our money is being spent - no accountability in the House that actually creates, discusses and passes the budget. Nope, not them/
This thing is playing out like the Road Runner and Coyote - only Acme seems to be benefiting.
“Failure to act would have savage impacts on American families: tumbling retirement savings and soaring interest rates for student loans, mortgages, credit cards, and car payments.”
But, for a GOP majority Congress that's a feature, not a bug, right?
Step right up GOP, grab your next hostage you can’t afford to shoot, make a big crisis out of refusing to do your fucking job, then cave in the 11th+ hour and have the Dems rescue the nation once again from your petulant tantrums and political stunts.
I see this going down one of two ways:
-
They quietly approve a debt ceiling hike in the middle of summer when no one is paying attention. I can see McConnell and Boehner doing so in order to avoid another embarrassing showdown that ends with total capitulation and questions about their leadership.
-
They suffer a few weeks of horrible optics where they’re once again threatening to default, only to wind up capitulating at the last moment when public sentiment turns against them. Pretty much the way they’ve done everything since they gained control of the House.
Upon seeing this press release Ted Cruz reached into his desk drawer for the baby oil and Kleenex…
I don’t understand how the GOP can still function as a relevant political party. It’s like we are having political discussion between people living in 2015 and people living in 1715. They are so out of touch, and their behavior so indicative of destructive and dishonest intentions. I guess what I’m really asking is: what the hell is wrong with the American Electorate? Nevermind…I don’t think I want to know the answer to that question.
The hostage takers are the MSM
-
Who do not explain the process taking place
-
Who do not place the President and the Congress in their proper positions in this process
-
Who do not accurately evaluate the spending taking place
-
Who do not stress the damage this brinkmanship does
And, since their stockholders are satisfied with things as they are, the majority of the population (which has little or no stocks of anything) will be impacted by the wishes of a few.
They need to raise it by end of next week.
It’s not just Hollywood that’s addicted to doing endless sequels…
The sad part is that the secretary felt it was necessary to yet again explain to them that…
Increasing the debt limit does not authorize new spending commitments. It simply allows the government to pay for expenditures Congress has already approved
Perhaps these guys need a more colorful metaphor that they can use to explain it to their base? Perhaps if they explained it saying that this is like paying your bar tab at the end of the night. You are not actually buying any more drinks or doing any more rounds… all you are doing is paying for what you bought earlier. The fact that you don’t like the total tab and perhaps don’t remember buying that round for all your friends is neither here nor there. If your long suffering wife (aka your base) meets you on your front porch with the rolling pin, then you can believe that she is not mad that you actually paid your bar tab;she is mad that you tried to drain so many bottles.
OMG!! I had forgotten. We get to witness Groundhog Day yet one more time.
Technically not. That’s when they turn to “extraordinary measures,” which can extend the deadline by weeks or even a few months.
