John Oliver has called this scandal “Stupid Watergate.” And, I’ll allow that a number of features are almost eerily similar, but Oliver understates the case… this is Imbecile Watergate. The Lying Orange Urine-Stain seems to be relying on the notion that in the end he’ll just pardon himself and walk away. He as much as said that when the whole thing started. It is so not gonna work that way.
There’s no question in my mind that Drumph cannot survive this, I can only hope that our country manages to do so.
The problem is that their client doesn’t believe in the Rule of Law. He keeps judging people on whether they’ve won a set of news cycles, or the number of positive mentions they get in his talks with Sean, Pirro, and Dobbs. He thinks: legal arguments are for suckers, it is all a matter of getting the right people in there!
While the new attorneys can be debriefed by the outgoing ones…
Do we have any evidence this is happening? If you have a good relationship with your employer and you announce your upcoming retirement and they hire your successor before you leave, then you’ve got every reason to bring the new person up to speed. If you get unceremoniously fired, you’ve got no incentive to debrief anybody on your way out the door.
“The President should not be talking about any of this,” said Wright, who worked in the counsel’s office for… President Obama. “If you’re in a normal White House situation, you’re actually going to kind of hide behind the fact that there is ongoing investigations…”
Actually, from January 20, 2009 – January 20, 2017 the “normal White House situation” was that the President didn’t need to comment on “ongoing investigations” because THERE WEREN’T ANY!!
Past presidents were advised to answer thus: “We will not be commenting on an ongoing investigation. We are cooperating fully and continue to hope for its speedy resolution. We continue to focus on serving the people of this nation.”
Easy-peasy.
Unless your client is Donald Trump, his lawyer is Rudy Giuliani, and your administration is made up of nothing but leaks.
I know we’ve joked about Trump Making Attorneys Get Attorneys, but what happens when Trump has run through all the possible lawyers, and some of his actions go to court. Can he plead that he can’t get responsible representation because he’s FUBAR his own defense?
But will it actually matter?
That’s the question.
Sadly, Republicans are lined up solidly behind him – a majority think the FBI is framing him.
Their problem really boils down to what lawyers call “bad facts,” which is a euphemism for “my client is guilty.”
why does someone who is innocent need a team of lawyers? Sure, you probably need a few clerks for document requests, but if he’s innocent, there should be no legal conflicts.
The ironic thing is, Trump is sending us his best… and this is the result.
plan to reveal that the president reimbursed his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, for paying hush money to a porn star claiming to have slept with [the president]
In 2018, this is a sentence one can just write in passing, or read without missing a beat.
Bad communications, they didn’t get the “Be Best” memo.
You can’t look away
'“There is no legal team, however it is assembled, that is going to wind up effectively transcending the severe limitations of a client.” ’ Perfect. Absolutely perfect.
It’s #BEBEST…
“That beast includes criminal investigations, not just for Russian election meddling, but into various Trump associates…”
Serious question for Ms. Sneed (or Mr. Marshall, for that matter):
Why does TPM keep referring to it as “Russian election meddling”?
Is there any (serious) doubt within the intelligence community, either here or abroad, that “Fancy Bear” aka Russian military intelligence – the GRU – was behind these multiple attacks on the DNC, journalists, military wives, the German parliament, French television, the White House, NATO, and election systems all across America?
Unless I’m missing something, this was (and continues to be at this very moment) a military attack on the United States and its allies.
The narrative of mere “meddling” de-legitimizes it’s (potentially existential) threat.
Is this a conscious editorial policy of TPM?
He’ll pardon everyone else, resign and then President Pence will pardon him. Then he’ll walk away
