The point of the Civil Rights Movement was, among other things to extend the right to vote to all adult citizens. The fact that registration laws inhibit the ability for all to vote cheapens the blood sweet and tears shed by those involved in the Civil Rights Movement. The comments of the Alabama Secretary of State undermines the work that was done and indicates a contempt for universal suffrage.
What a jerk.
If you banned âlazyâ voterâs, who would be around to vote GOP?
No oneâŚ
Merrill then listed civil rights leaders like Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks, arguing that their legacy would be diminished by automatic voter registration.
Nothing frosts my melon like crypto-Confederates invoking the names of civil rights heros to support voter suppression or whatever attack on civil rights theyâre attempting at that moment.
Youâve got a lot of nerve, asshole.
âI donât think that just because your birthday comes around, that you ought to be registered to vote,â
I agree. The right to vote is enshrined in the Constitution; registration shouldnât be necessary at all. After all, I didnât have to register for my right to refuse to quarter soldiers in my home.
Totally OT. From ThinkProgress. I havenât seen it reported by any MSM outlet yet.
FBI launches internal investigation into its own Twitter account
Perhaps yet another dormant FBI Twitter account will tweet about it.
Theyâre not being lazy; theyâre waiting for that trickle-down money that Reagan promised them.
Bet you could get Elijah Cummings on the phone and ask him if heâs embarrassed. Or are you only brave enough to invoke dead civil rights leaders?
US Konstitution is for Active White Males only.
Tragically, this part got edited out of the clip:
As evidence that âthem sorry and lazy peopleâ are in fact sorry and lazy, Merrill noted that in a halcyon, bygone era of grand plantations and happy, singing âservants,â some of the servants had to âgit a good whuppinââ to encourage them to pick enough cotton. âThings worked right back in them days. We loved 'em sorry and lazy people, just like they wuz our own children. Some of my BEST friends are sorry and lazy people. But you wouldnât want them putting down their satchels and trying to run the plantation â now, would you?â he asked. âAnd they loved us for whuppinâ âem because they knew what we wuz just making sure that the plantation prospered for everyoneâs benefit. Weâre just trying to turn back the clock to them happy, musical days. Thatâs all weâre tryinâ to do.â
Why have more polling places in minority neighborhoods? It will just make âthemâ lazy. Jeesh. These people almost make me forget my manners. How can they think this is appropriate behavior?
Translation: âlazy peopleâ = BLACK PEOPLE.
My congressman, John Lewis, is very much alive.
Crypto Confederates invoking the names of black Civil Rights heroes in order to perpetuate the old Southern stereotypes of shifty unambitious lazy black folks who donât deserve the vote as much as Cletus, Beauregard and all those hard working ambitious white boys who live in the Trailer Park down the way.
Lazy? NahâŚ
He meant âshiftlessâ and âuppityââŚ
actually doing a spit take

Do people realize that whenever a microphone or interviewer is placed in front of you it does not require you to say whatever comes to mind? It doesnât appear to be the case these days and is really depressing as most of the idiocy is coming from people in positions of leadership - you know, the ones who we hold to a higher bar.
âI donât think that just because your birthday comes around, that you ought to be registered to vote,â Secretary of State John Merrill ÂŽ said in an interview published online Wednesday for an upcoming documentary by Brian Jenkins âAnswering the Call.â
question: At what age does one have to register for Selective Service again?
