I bet behind closed doors Coburn believes that there should still be indentured servants, debtors prisons, children’s work houses, and maybe even AAs going back to the cotton fields. Yes, Coburn is wishful for those good old days when those pesky poor people knew their place.
I still think it has a deterrent capability
Obviously not enough of one.
Or why not a buck and a quarter minimum wage? Let see how little we can pay our employees to rake in even more cash for the 1%ers!
“Why the public accepts this, I’ll never understand.”
I’m guessing that was a rhetorical question.
The free market. Gah!
You would think that people who are paid $174K and get AUTOMATIC pay increases would, could, possibly even consider that $7.25 is too little for people who really work. Nah, they don’t think about people making minimum wage.
Pay members of Congress minimum wage. And they only get paid for the hours they work. No vacation pay.
What would it take to ban the euphemism “in the wake of” from all TPM writing? It would be such a good thing! Unless you’re talking about water skiing, “after” will do the trick every time.
What a vile little man.
Coburn is a rabid ideologue, impervious to facts. He is a dangerous nitwit, but if Oklahoma wants lower wages, I think they should be allowed to have them!
“I don’t believe you ought to interfere in the market.”
Fine, then every subsidy going to business needs to be cut right now. They need to be completely eliminated. It isn’t a free market if the businesses are siphoning money from the Federal Government.
I guess you dismiss the postwar economic boom, which was the largest in history then? I’m happy to see you ignore the phony Reagan era “prosperity”, which as we know wasn’t real.
So if raising the minimum wage is a ‘job killer’ then is lowering it a ‘job creator’? If we lowered it to $0.00 per hour and people agreed to work for free (or were forced too, think slavery) we would likely have full employment. No?
And don’t forget to END the Farm Bill!
Generally speaking, the workers I’ve heard supporting garbage like this are the same ones who believe that unions kill off jobs. The reason that Coburn gets away with this is due to a majority of Okies who buy into this foolishness of actively undermining themselves. The really don’t believe that they are worthy of anything better in their lives and so side with the 1%.
“I don’t believe you ought to interfere in the market. My theory is if Oklahomans want a minimum wage, we ought to have it,” he said. “I don’t believe there ought to be a national minimum wage.”
Well, why not Tommy? Then an American might be able to make a living scraping that cheese mold or whatever it is off your face instead of walking around a Nevada ranch defending an old white guy’s right to steal.
Well, I think we should pay them nothing and just let them live off their bribes.
Oh, make no mistake. Coburn is among the handful of ideological purists who’d love to end the Farm Bill–both the agricultural subsidies part and the SNAP part. Anything that makes food affordable to poor people is just an unwarranted interference in the working of the market.
Exactly. On the days they are actually scheduled to work their pay comes to about $70/hr and they do NOTHING for it. I guess they are trying to imitate their multimillionaire masters who also do nothing for their money, but have their money ‘work for them’ to produce more money.
