Discussion: Tlaib Says Trump Impeachment 'Not About' 2020 Elections: 'Public's Trust Is At Stake'

I guess if I supported Pelosi and her history of losing as much as you do, I’d try to change the subject, too.

In regards to “inadvertently reelecting the motherfucker,” this quote essentially sums it up, and it is from a Pelosi supporter:

Yeah, I’m a firm supporter of Pelosi. But I think on this topic [impeachment], she’s dead wrong. Impeaching carries risks. Not impeaching carries risks. But one set of risks also involves doing the right thing.

–Mark Sumner for Daily Kos

She should be doing the right thing, but she isn’t. And until she lives up to her oath of office to defend the Constitution and starts to act like a leader of the opposition party, I will castigate her relentlessly.

And, you should also know that I am not alone in my calls for starting impeachment now. There are quite a few Democratic Reps who vocally support starting an impeachment process now. So my position is not untenable within the Democratic caucus now.

No, its people pointing out the obvious. For some reason Pelosi doesn’t want to do her constitutional duty, just as she dodged the same duty in 2006. Most likely reason: she’s made a deal with the 1%/Wall Street/Bankers… and they’ll let Biden win. She’s probably not dealing with Putin though. And right now Putin’s Demented Puppet is winning.

“Even if it feeds the Trump narrative, discourages Democratic and Independent turnout and results in Trump’s reelection.”

Got it…

No evidence that any of that would happen, but are you saying that the decision to impeach or not should be based on fear of imaginary political consequences? What happened to defending the Constitution and rule of law?

What about the public trust?

Reposting the original article, since you may not have read it:

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) on Sunday pushed back against some Democrats’ concern that impeaching President Donald Trump would help him in the 2020 election.

“Look, this is not about the 2020 elections,” Tlaib told “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd. “It’s about doing what’s right, now, for our country.”

“This is going to be a precedent that we set when we don’t hold this President accountable to the rule of law and to the United States Constitution,” she continued. “The public’s trust is at stake.”

Tlaib argued that she and other lawmakers can’t pass important legislation when Trump “continues to lie to the American people.”

Yup. Called cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Some people seem to have a tough time with the concept.

President McConnell.

When I played, I knew some nightclub owners like McConnell. There is a flashy S.O.B. hogging up all the publicity…and there is a McConnell-like person controlling HIM, in addition to musicians, booking agents, club staff, advertising, salaries, booking dates…and bad publicity.

Seriously dude, you’re gonna have to try harder…

Per Cas, I am on my second McConnell post.

McConnell is an avowed racist. But he is not the Lester Maddox type. With McConnell, it’s not the hate so much as the pleasure derived from the effects of the hate. There is no logical reason why an American of WalMart means would champion the 0.001%…other than racism (or masochism)…But McConnell sure feels good with the results. And that’s the gig with McConnell.

Just outsmarting everybody by using America’s Original Sin.

Non quod erat demonstrandum.

You do know that we are talking about the impacts of impeachment or not in 2020, right?

Seriously, “dude,” the politics of impeachment were not a factor in 2016.

C’mon, dude, you reallly* aren’t trying any more.

I just have to copy this very simple and correct observation from Tlaib:

“Look, this is not about the 2020 elections. It’s about doing what’s right, now, for our country…This is going to be a precedent that we set when we don’t hold this President accountable to the rule of law and to the United States Constitution. The public’s trust is at stake.”

You think that is equivalent? Wow.

Serious question. Which is more important
…given the state of everything including climate change - getting him the hell out of office – or setting the correct ethical standard?

If this were 40 years ago I would opt for the latter. With the GOP and the world the way they are now I regretfully opt for the former.

Edited to correct the mraning. I miss -spoke.

Pelosi’s job is to see that the Democrats get control of the government
If we don’t, that may be all she wrote

I do understand and feel much the same way. Sometimes, though, it is so ridiculous, so infantile it just screams to be addressed.

Starting impeachment hearings or not will not affect 2020 elections. Do it or not, the GOP will attack the “disloyal” and “do nothing” Democrats.

Starting impeachment hearings brings Trump’s misdeeds to light and lays them out in front of the American people. Don’t let Turtle’s threat of letting Trump off stop us from bringing the charges and airing the evidence. The future of the country is at stake. Doing nothing at this point, in the face of this flagrant lawlessness and criminal behavior of the President, sets an indelible precedent that another President – who is not so inconceivably inept as Trump – will take advantage of.

If inaction leads to Trump leaving office without facing criminal proceedings, it is quite literally setting into motion the death of the US government. We might be able to heroically save it with blood and sweat and tears, but it will never be easier to stop the end of our country than now.

Bingo. All the talk about 'will they or won’t they," and what it means for Democrats is completely ignoring the fact that one chamber of the legislature is completely shirking their oaths to uphold and defend the Constitution. THAT is the story, yet few in the press appear to raise that issue.

Starting impeachment hearings or not will not affect 2020 elections

And your reasoning and/or evidence for this proposition is?

No suggestion here to not do anything. Impeachment is inevitable, as is acquittal. It’s about the timing. There’s action going on, alright, on multiple levels.

“Do it or not, the GOP will attack the ;disloyal’ and ‘do nothing’ Democrats.” True.

“Starting impeachment hearings will not affect 2020 elections.” We don’t know that. We don’t know that at all. Trump sure as fuck will do everything in his considerable power to make it count.

Impeachment will not cost the Dems the White House. But impeachment must be in service of the Election, since that is the only way to remove Trump. The path to Trump’s removal runs through 2020, and everything must be done in service of this, period. So timing is critical and not easy to discern at this time.

A few months after Watergate, in the fall of '74, Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill noted the process was like squeezing a pimple and noted the pitfalls of squeezing too soon. Although there are precious few Watergate analogies that hold up (speaking as a one-time Watergate junkie), I suspect O’Neill’s observation is about where we are.

Maybe I’m being too harsh on Congresswoman Tlaib (who I like and admire), I don’t know; and leaders often have to mask their true intensions. Like Speaker Pelosi; also Lincoln, Abe and Roosevelt, Franklin Delano.

On the one hand, at this time I don’t see Trump growing out his 46.09% of the vote and stands to lose at least some. On the other hand we must be mindful of the a priori that having that magic R after your name pretty much (and rarely not) guarantees 45% of the vote to start with.

First, you are saying that a Democratic president who would do the same things as Trump does is a possibility. You are also saying that the only reason Democrats have not started impeachment is due to their timidity compared to GOP, despite the fact that any GOP action would have been driven by desire for power, not the desire to protect the constitution.

So yes, you are saying that both parties are the same. As always…
