Discussion: The Unprecedented Coming Legal Battle Over Trump's Census Citizenship Move

the undercount would lead to a shrinking of their political representation, and a stiffing of federal resources allocated for them.

Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which has the net effect of raising total taxes on Californians, stiffing seems to be what the GOP do.

On the News “Not seen on the census since the 1950’s”
Which is exactly where they want to be.
Hopefully this election was the last hurrah of the Old White guys minority.

According to this article in Newsweek, Texas could lose big, both on federal $$ but also on representation in Congress:

There will be more than a few Texas Goopers who might have a second think about this…particularly in losing a US House member or two (they gained 4 seats in 2010 due to immigrants). The $$ would also hurt.

Guess it all depends on how much they are willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces.

On the other hand, it’s the GOP, so disfigurement is no hurdle.

Saenz predicted the move may even backfire on the Trump administration
by further motivating Latinos and other vulnerable populations to
participate in an act of defiance, while courts wrangle with the
question.

hypothetically, or perhaps not hypothetically, couldn’t it lead to angry frustrated citizens who live in red districts and red states and don’t like the GOP to “forget” to fill out their census form?

Where is Texas going to lose representation–my guess is in those teaming cosmopolitan cities where Democrats have focused their attention. This is still a net benefit to the old white guys party.

If they believe that to be so, the Texas GOP may ultimately decide these are worth sacrificing, even if their overall % in the House drops marginally as a result. On the other hand, it’s not so clear how many of the immigrants they are targeting are farm workers and live in the countryside (i.e., deep Red). Remember when the first indications of ICE crackdowns came after the Tea Party sweep in 2010 and other anti-immigrant measure: farmers couldn’t get their crops harvested (this is an oldie from after the 2010 election and this is from 2011). It’s not getting better under Trump: this goes back to 2016, as does this one.

The $$$ may ultimately hurt more, but the repercussions of such a decision may already be felt well ahead of 2020. And this is all under Spanky’s watch.

(Sadly, if some of this can be turned around after the Blue Wave in 2018, the Dems will have saved Spanky’s bacon on this point, even as they continue to be reviled…)

How about a massive boycott of that particular question by everyone, citizens and noncitizens?

The founding fathers did not want to count slaves because they were not considered citizens so they compromised and wrote the “3/5ths” of a human debacle in the constitution.

Now the trump administration considers undocumented workers less than the original sin of counting slaves as 3/5ths of a person to not even counting them…I guess they are invisible.

And no i am not comparing undocumented workers to slaves, just using an example of history when the government did not want to count correct number of people living in the United States for political reasons.

I’m curious as to whom brought this back to the forefront.
Because there is no way in hell that trumps brain could even remotely comprehend the history of this idea and promote it to the future.
He will play the part but he just too stupid to put those pieces together.

Are we required by law to answer every question? I know it is illegal to lie but to leave a question blank? If this question is included, I will simply not answer it. If ICE wants to question me, so be it.

“They don’t want you to be counted!”

Sounds like a rallying cry for full participation to me. Hope folks capitalize on that if the lawsuits fail, or even if it succeeds.

Republicans – Rooting for the failure of Democracy. Wrap them in it and kick them to the curb.

To me, the constitutional question can be phrased as this: How inaccurate can a Constitutionally-required census be before it is considered unconstitutional?
