Discussion: The Republican Senate Majority Is Collapsing Around Mitch McConnell

Yes, that’s good…but the Democrats need some pretty strong motivating to really turn out the vote, and pure hatred of the Republican candidate isn’t likely to cut it.

Plus, we need to take down the House.

Gaining the majority for democrats in the Senate is very very important and the same for the House. So, down ticket races are critical folks!
Vote this November. Get your friends out to vote!

Who is “duffy” in this article?

Going to guess that Duffy might be Jennifer Duffy, Senior Editor for The Cook Political Report, responsible for U.S. Senate and Governors races.

need to focus on state races too

With the gerrymandering in states like mine (Ohio) it is very unlikely there will be much change in our House representation.

I’d also suggest that McCain’s and Grassley’s challengers find a way to bring up the elephant in the room - they’re both really old. McCain is 80 and Grassley is 83. It’s time to put them out to pasture.

Every Democrat out there running for office needs to take this cue.

“Leave the crazy Republican past behind, let’s get on with a stable Democratic future!”

…use the chaos of this insane Republican fiasco to look SIMPLY sane.

Posing these wild-eyed Republicans as frantic, feckless and fickle narcissists is no longer necessary, they are doing it for you.

That image is about to compound, as they get ever closer to Cleveland.

Let the Republicans grab the crazy mantle, and help them own it.

Unlikely, but not impossible. The Republicans are vulnerable, and we cannot flip the House if we are not willing to fight for it.

Holding up the devastation in Kansas and Puerto Rico and pointing out that this is the Republican endgame would probably help a lot too.

And use Dem money to mess with the GOP. Run adds for Kasich in Indiana and Cruz in Oregon. Don’t let them dictate the terms of even their OWN campaigns. Off-balance is deadly to them.

It is just because I find TPM so valuable that I get very annoyed when I come across sloppy writing like the unidentified “Duffy” in the third paragraph or the Kentucky-for-Kansas substitution in a headline last week. Good copyediting is important!

There is no way the Dems will control the House until (at least) after the next census.

"But the more Democrats can win in 2016 the better insulated they will be for the 2018 midterm elections when they face another terrible, no good, Senate map where Democratic senators from North Dakota to West Virginia face re-election.

“They really need to run up the score this year," Kondik said."

…and put some serious efforts into exposing Republican vote-suppression and gerrymandering. Make it an obsession, dissect some of the worst scenarios and expose them in a documentary.

Expose it at every turn, use it to remind voters they were manipulated, run ads asking “The people” if they want to be manipulated that way, with wonky maps exposing the most egregious cases. Even if it doesn’t change those districts, it will change the voting habits of many in them.

Also, if they haven’t made the move yet by then, putting marijuana legalization, or even just de-scheduling it, on a ballot referendum would assure Democrats would achieve a rare break from that bi-polar mid-term madness that plagues this nation.

That issue alone would assure an historic turnout in the 2018 mid-term that would simply defy historical models.

Just food for thought.

Oh noooozer’! Mitch might have to give up the position of Post Turtle of the Senate?

[Curious Man: “Oh? What is a post turtle?”
Old Farmer: “When yer driving down a country road, and ya’ come across a
fence post with a turtle balanced on top? That’s a post turtle. Ya’
know he didn’t get there by himself, he don’t belong there, he can’t get
anything done while he’s up there, you just wonder what kind of
dumb asses put him up there to begin with
and you just want to help take the
poor thang down.”]

@rosie

Enough of the doom and gloom! Many pundits say it’s possible. If we can give the new Dem. President the 2 Houses for just 2 years, we can make a very rewarding gift indeed to him/her.

Why use McConnell’s name in the headline when he is not mentioned once in the article?

Analyst Kondik implies moderate gooper senators will be dragged down by Trump/Cruz. Umm, there is no such thing as a moderate gooper senator. Toomey came to his seat from the Club for Growth, not exactly the center position. Look at any of the vulnerable repugs voting records, their willingness to reach accord, and not their recently found ‘moderate’ religion. They all are brothers in arms with the worst of the GOP.

As a long-time political junkie(no doubt the only one here!) and NH resident, who would love to see Kelly Ayotte get knocked off by Gov. Hasen, I am very skeptical about it happening. NH has more Independents as a percentage of actual voters than any other state. Even though she’s voted with her party like 95% of the time, she’s been very careful to grab on to highly visible bipartisan efforts, most recently dealing with our opiod crisis. She refers to herself as “independent”, and those prominent issues help her make the case. Though I despise her for her party line voting, and even though NH tends to go blue in Presidential election years (voted for O twice!), I wouldn’t move this seat into the blue column until we see actually election results. I believe it will be very tight.
