Key there is to pickup lots of governorship terms that straddle that census. Shouldn’t be hard as the goopers are ruining the states they control.
Young people have demonstrated they won’t turn out just because they are afraid of Trump or just because their supposed “identity group leaders” tell them to vote for Hillary. They need to have a positive reason. I think Hillary is going to have to pivot to a more assertive agenda. Her “little things” approach isn’t going to turn out the new Bernie voters.
As much as I love TPM, the frequency of losing a first reference is driving the journalist in me absolutely nuts.
If it does collapse, there is justice in the universe. The Turtle’s strategy of party before country is despicable and he deserves all the scorn and chaos he can get. Throw these knee jerk obstructionists out and put some people in there who actually give a shit about improving things for everyone, not just the GOP. Look at CA for an example of how things can take a turn for the better once the GOP is shown the door.
I hope you’re wrong, Sabatia. See you at the polls in November. And btw the Governor’s name is ‘Hassan’. It’ll be on the Democratic side of the ballot. (Yeah, yeah, I know…)
I don’t get it with Dems and all their negative vibs. Obama had the house from 2008 to 2010.
What we have to do in Kansas is strengthen the Democratic party and focus it on the Kansas legislature. Dems need to shake the Republicans strangle hold on it and then take the governorship back as soon as possible. Ground up is the only way we are going to change things in most Red states.
Never underestimate the dumbness of the average GOP voter. Whisper the magic words “tax cuts” and they will vote for any wrecking ball.
Democrats will win the Senate majority and the White House in 2016:
Then we can replace Scalia and probably 2 other judges during that 2 year window. Finally, we can end the reign of terror of the most conservative SCOTUS in modern history. Chief Justice Robert’s head is going to spin loose.
McConnell is a fool.
“It creates lots of problems and headaches for Republicans, and Democrats firmly believe that it is going to be a train wreck unlike anything seen in a long time,” says Cook Political Report analyst Jennifer Duffy. “I have Democrats talking to me about 8 to 10 seats. I am not there yet.”
@go2goal we can replace Scalia
You’ll have to pry that gavel out of his cold hand.
Iowa, Pennsylvania, Colorado, North Carolina, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania in the Democrats’ direction
And Iowa and Colorado!! And Ohio, too!
Grasley is done. Write it down.
This is where I’d really like to see Hillary setting some best-case-scenario goals that might motivate less-engaged voters. If they hit the trifecta, what are they going to do with their year or two-long opening? How are they going to sustainably un-fuck the economy for working people (especially important with cyclical recession seemingly imminent)? What’s the next piece of the social safety net they’d expand? What would they do about the structural stuff, like money in politics?
How’s that ‘making Obama a one-term president’ workin’ out for ya, Mitch?
The nonpartisan Crystal Ball report from Larry Sabato shows all the races, and here’s the Senate in particular. Dems 47, Rs 48, 5 tossups.

@dnl Mitch will soon find his groove and he’ll tell us about HRC and her one term.
@padfoot Not necessarily. Look at the state’s’ breakdown. Iowa is so far safely R
Chuck Grassley

– State Sen. Rob Hogg
– Ex-state Rep. Bob Krause
– Ex-state Sen. Tom Fiegen Likely R
The road to taking back the House goes through the Senate. Control of the Senate means confirmation of Scalia’s replacement (and Breyer’s, assuming he retires in the next term as I expect). Also perhaps Kennedy, if he discovers that writing dissents is less fun than being the deciding vote. With a working majority of the SCOTUS, we could overturn Shelby (which gutted the Voting Rights Act), and strike down the obvious partisan gerrymanders in the rest of the country. At that point Dems would have a real shot at the House.
It’s a toss up
NH Kelly Ayotte
(Running) Ex-state Sen. Jim Rubens – Gov. Maggie Hassan Toss-up
Democrats talking about putting 17 Senate seats in play, eh? What a dream that would be, to make the filibuster a moot point.
While we’re at it, put freaking Alaska in play. It’s not particularly Democratic, but their Senate races have waxed competitive lately. Find the right democratic-leaning populist and have them go after Murkowski…make her at least WORK for it!
This comment has me picturing an ad in the vein of Kickstarter push-goals. If you elect Hillary you get x. If you elect Hillary and flip the Senate you get x AND y. If you elect Hillary, flip the Senate and the House you get x AND y AND z.
Portman and Toomey are the ‘pragmatic policy makers’ of the Republicans in this senate.
Tragic on so many levels.
