Ed, the writer, is a well known professional Democratic operative who is reflecting the conventional wisdom of professional political operatives in both parties.
They are all basing their views primarily on what normally happens in the last midterm of a President’s presidency. Usually the President’s party has run out of steam and the out of power party has greater enthusiasm as it gins up for a serious run at the White House. In addition Republicans do better in midterms because their old white base doesn’t have anything better to do on the first Tuesday in November than vote. In normal times it takes real effort to get folks out to vote Democratic because younger people work and don’t watch Fox 24/7. I don’t necessarily think these are “normal” times.
A F’N MEN if we decide to get up OFF OUR collective asses and register to vote get our freinds and family members to do the same and go to the polls and VOTE…the so called news and republicons will be mighty suprised about the results …I cant understand how with all the BS the republicons have pulled and cost this country unknown billiopns of dollars and untold millions of jobs how we can just sit there and take it…maybe its just me but people get MAD get energized and VOTE
Republicans legitimately have a shot at only THREE Senate seats currently under Democratic control, West Virginia, Montana and South Dakota. Democrats have a legitimate shot at taking TWO Republican held seats, Kentucky and Georgia. The net gain of ONE for Republicans does NOT give them Senate control, anything said to the contrary is simply bullshit and a pipedream for the teacons…Dems also have a very legit shot at taking the House, they only need to turn 18 seats. Considering that there is now a movement to IMPEACH Boehner over his illegal spending of taxpayer money on a phony lawsuit against the President, the Democrats chaces rise significantly…
Exactly. I’m not conceding anything. Dems are gonna pick up Governorships. There is a very real possibility of break-even in the Senate or minimal GOP gains. I don’t have a good sense of the House races. I think it could be a minimal gains election either way in the House.
I am so sick of the “Republicans are doomed” meme. We’ve heard this for several years now but all evidence is to the contrary. At this point it is just Democratic (and liberal) wishful thinking.
The only way to win is to show up at the polls - assuming your right to vote hasn’t been taken away from you. Republicans know this is how you win elections and thus effect policy. Sadly Democrats do not.
Kilgore’s thesis, that you’re going to win now but that will lock you into losing later, is pretty common among Democrats.
I don’t think anyone really knows how successful on-the-ground registration and GOTV efforts are. The assumption is it’s marginal, a point or two either way.
Could that be because no analysts ever step onto the grassroots for more than a picnic?
I’d really like someone to find sources within state Democratic parties who will speak honestly – with numbers – about how many votes they’ve lined up due to the last year’s activism.
I think the answer may surprise, but I also think a lot of base activists are keeping things on the down low until November, so as not to rile the GOP.

I find it surprising that the author says the Republicans may pick up more governors in 2014. The polls (if they can be trusted at all) indicate that several GOP governors are going down - Corbett in Penn., Scott in Florida, and Brownback in Kansas. In addition, Walker’s challenger in Wisconsin is running neck and neck with him. So where will the gain come from?

It’s time to take off the kid gloves and have a nationwide registration drive aimed at the young, women, and minorities, particularly Hispanic citizens. Then we need to make sure those people get to the polls and their votes are actually counted. That would cost an amazingly small amount of money.
