Discussion: Texas Senate Approves Bill To Label Those With Insurance Through O-care

Discussion for article #236823

It’s hard to believe that the Texas ledge could get worse, and yet, every session they do.

The legislation, which already passed in the House, would require health insurers to label those insurance cards with “QHP.”

When will “they” be required to use separate (but equal, of course) restrooms and water fountains?

More Southern (in)justice by bigots…

Jeezez Fen Christ this is why single payer Medicare for all would have been leaps and bounds better then the oligarchy filled ACA.

The bill was proposed in order to address issues doctors may experience with a 90-day grace period established by the Affordable Care act for individuals who receive subsidies for their health insurance.

Bullshit. Total, complete steaming pile of bullshit. If I want to read stories that treat transparent Republican pretexts as fact, or the functional equivalent of fact, I’ll go to the fucking AP. Could we not have at least signaled the possibility of this assertion being purely pretexutal by putting a “Republicans say” at the front of the sentence instead of treating the obvious pretext as if it was objective fact?

The billing software used by virtually all doctors is perfectly capable of identifying people with brand new policies who might be subject to a waiting period. Which, by the way, is a) only going to apply if you’re a first time ACA policy older and b) unlikely to matter in your first visit anyway if the policy has a bronze level co-pay and deductible.

Neurologist Dr. Sara Austin, who testified on behalf of the Texas Medical Association in support of the legislation, argued that the bill would help doctors understand what type of coverage patients have and help them remind patients to pay their premiums.

Also total bullshit. No doctor I’ve ever heard of even acknowledges the existence of insurance and insurance problems unless they are pushed right into his/her face and no medical practice I’ve ever heard of would countenance paying employees use time to remind people to pay their premiums.

What a horrible, hateful, stupid place Texas has ended up being. I’m glad I got out when I did.

The Scarlett letter should be “R” for responsible.

Wouldn’t a better label be, “Smart person?”

Yeah-- sure woulda’!
But I heard BHO’s Single-Payer-Farting-Unicorn was constipated during that particular Congressional Session.
So this is what we got stuck with.

Of course-- I’d be dead now if the pre-existing conditions clause hadn’t been enacted precisely when it was.
So I’m kinda’ happy the ACA happened with all its’ warts-- when and how it did!

Hell, I bought insurance on the exchange and was happy to have a straightforward marketplace. This is going to cost the insurance companies more money if the have to reissue cards. That’s why I thought it wouldn’t pass.

I would rather have the scarlet “O” on my card, please!

Yeah, we have private insurance that now has to cover - 100% - a family member’s illness that was legally excluded on our policy prior to the passage of the ACA. So while I would have liked medicare for all, and I think we need to get there or something like it in the years to come, I’m profoundly grateful that the ACA passed.

I hope when final labeling procedures are passed Jerky Rick’s Tattoo Emporium is left off the approved vendor list. How the hell my requested death skull ended up looking like a dung beetle is beyond comprehension.

Texas receives $55 billion annually in federal aid. The Census Bureau calls it “the single largest funding stream for state government.” For every two dollars sent to Washington, they get back three dollars for disaster relief, highway construction, military spending, oil-spill cleanups, bank bailouts, etc.

I have not read the language of the bill, but I assume it also requires state legislators and the governor to carry documentation of their own dependence on federal largesse?

You are dead on in your criticism of the reporting.
Most of the stuff Texas Republicans say they are acting on is misinformation or intentionally misrepresented and TPM’s reporters should know that as context.
