Discussion: Study: Fox News Viewers Are More Uninformed About Immigration

I could be very wrong about this, but I expect positive changes once Ailes is off the scene. I just can’t believe the authoritarian structure of the enterprise surviving his exit; it seems held together by his monstrous pathos. I don’t know if there is any kind of heir-apparent waiting in the wings, but he is practically the originator of the whole politicizing the news effort in the latter half of the 20th century.

Precisely. An uninformed person has a 50/50 chance of answering a factual question correctly, not unlike a flipped coin. FoxNews viewers, on the other hand, are actively misinformed - most of what they think they know is wrong, so they end up doing much more poorly than a coin toss.

It’s illegal for them to work, how can they be counted in the unemployed?
Amnesty won’t make present conditions worse for Americans-- well, that’s illogical and worthy of Fox
Every day they are here lower the conditions for working and poor Americans. Every job they take is a job denied an American. Let’s not talk about the farms in New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver, or LA.
Every illegal immigrant child in school lessens the citizen child’s share of dwindling education dollars.
I wish the answer were less harsh, I really do, but…Do we support at risk Americans our countrymen or not.

“Libs” opines:

“Well, considering the abysmal low viewership and tanking rating of MSNBC, it’s a relief that the “Informed” are very few and far apart. I guess this study portrays the vast majority of Americans to be ignorant Republicans, considering the overwhelming ratings posted by FOX NEWS at every time of the day and across all ages and walk of life.”

As you have been told repeatedly over the years, ratings have nothing at all to do with quality, accuracy, fairness, or any other qualitative measurement.

Fox gets higher ratings for a number of reasons, the primary one being that it is offered on cable systems basic packages, while MSNBC is on a higher and costlier tier.

The average age of a Fox News viewer is 68 or so, and rising, and those people sit in front of the boob tube for more time per day.

And conservatives rigid belief system requires constant and mind-numbing reinforcement, lest reality creep in and disturb their fantasy world-view.

In short----your argument has no basis in fact and has no bearing on the subject at hand.

Quelle surprise.

Isn’t it ironic (hypocritical) that those most against immigration reform are Christians? I guess they think they’re the only ones who deserve to live here.

And water is wet.

What are you even trying to say? Is it that “deregulated” media are too profitable or that “old” media are dying? I think you’re trying to distinguish between print and broadcast media, but I’m not sure at all. Maybe you ought to do a little reading before you opine on a topic about which you obviously know very little.

Many of us have been saying for the past several years that ALL cable news is doing a terrible job. Fox has a Conservative slant, MSNBC has a Liberal slant and CNN is just plain awful.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find that anyone who watches only one of the three cable networks with no other news source, would also be found to be misinformed (and no, perhaps not as much as Fox News fans are, but CNN certainly isn’t doing anyone any favors either).

Identifying as a Republican born-again Christian who watches Fox News is a clear identifier of being a fucking moron.

Nasty from jump…Nice ‘discussion’ here in the hive.
Regulation required lots of extra employees and effort (broadcast media, to my knowledge print has never been regulated but maybe you could suggest reading material) and that made it more expensive…no regulation, more profit.
Old broadcast/cable media is dying if the ratings are anything to go by.
Perhaps I should, in my rush, have specified the type of media that was obvious by my statement to avoid your snide, vicious reply.
Josh can moderate and change comments until the cows come home but nasty remarks by people like you will always harm the discussions here…

The true gauge of the content of Fox is not whether they inform-it’s the ratings they get.
Studies show that if more people watch you, the truth of your content rises in parallel (Fox News Poll 8/08)
Higher ratings mean more revenue and any Randian can explain that the free market is the ultimate arbiter of the inherent value of anything from shoes to the veracity of a newscaster’s statements.
Liberals are just too lazy to do the hard work of fabricating the news. They expect consumers to be satisfied with boring facts instead of visceral appeals to bigotry and free-floating anger.

Only on immigration? Fox viewers are more uninformed on everything…thats…E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G…
