The pro-treaty chorus is smart enough to know that there is general agreement in the American people (I hope) as to the wisdom of this treaty particularly when they read the details, but the No Party must always rise to the top of news coverage because it’s incendiary, volatile and click worthy. Try a newspaper, you’ll see balanced coverage

Hear hear, like x 1000! The R’s messaging is out in front defining the issue early and in simple visceral terms, as usual. Where are the strong D’s to defend the proposal? Surely they learned from 2014 that running away from the president and his accomplishments is the wrong way to go.

Maybe, maybe not. Let’s see how Sen. Bob Corker, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, will vote.
He did not sign Sen. Cotton’s letter in March, and had seemed (somewhat) sane on this issue. He might have some sway with his caucus members.

If I’m reading this correctly, the House in this instance will be involved in approving the deal, but an Obama override of a veto would be easily done.
Under the terms of legislation passed in May, Congress has 60 days to scrutinize the accord between Iran and the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany, and then to vote to accept or reject it — or to do nothing. The president can veto any resolution of disapproval. Congress needs a two-thirds majority in each house to override the veto, so to put the deal into force, Mr. Obama only needs one-third of one of the houses to stand with him.

Wasn’t all that long ago that Boehner found it acceptable to spend hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of US lives to destroy Iran’s main rival, based partly on what a screwball from Iran said about Iraq’s weapons program.
What is the GOP alternative? This deal is a step in the right direction. It’s better to engage and do something substantive than nothing at all. President Bush didn’t address it realistically, so President Obama had no choice.

Aware of that, but that only underscores just how unprecedented the ODS has escalated, that suddenly the House is involved in rejecting already agreed to treaties, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Something that was never part of the Constitutional structure of separation of powers (i.e. the Constitution makes clear the House has no involvement in treaties).

It is not a treaty. It is an odd situation where Congress voted to give itself an oversight role in the process. Meaning if they do not like it they can pass a statement saying as much, Obama would veto it and unless they can override it the thing would go on.
It is largely political grandstanding.

You mean to override a veto? In the senate it may be possible. In the House it is not happening. They would still need to pull over pretty overwhelming Dem support. Even if they pull over some it would not be enough. Even in the senate it is not a for sure conclusion.
Most were on board to let the Congress have oversight, but it is somewhat hard to think they would be of the same line as the chicken hawks. At least a large number of them. Maybe I am wrong though.

Indeed, but the current deal does not require a new agreement through the Senate as if it were a new treaty.

No, this is not a treaty situation, at all. The Congressional role comes in two ways: (1) Under the recently enacted legislation that gives Congress 60 days to review and pass legislation of disapproval (total or partial), which Obama can veto; and (2) the various sanctions laws currently in place that Congress can refuse to amend or repeal, which will have some effect on Iran, but a declining degree as other countries start to trade with Iran. The American business community will not want to be left out of that increasing trade.
