Discussion: Senate Takes Major Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

Oh, you dear Republicans - always with the gun metaphor. Where is it pointed, Tom? The cold metal is pressed against your temple while you think it’s pointed at the Democrats on the other side of the room. When it goes off, you would be surprised if you weren’t dead.

“We must act quickly to bring relief to the American people,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY.

There used to be some comfort in the thought that Leader McConnell R-KY was merely a cynical schemer, albeit at a world-historical level. I’m beginning to worry that he is literally crazy.

Thoughtful, important, long-term parts of ACA, the stuff people won’t appreciate until they need it --like caps , and stuff that takes time to show dividends, like preventive care and cost controls, are the easiest to get rid of by hucksters for short-term thining voters. That’s painful to watch.

But this is also true: Without ACA, we would not be having a conversation or policy fight over HOW to cover as many people as possible fairly. No way the GOP would be doing this at all. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid reframed this discussion and expectation for the nation. That’s a positive.

True, but that’s a pretty thin reed on which to base one’s happiness. They are going to blow it up without a clue about how to put it back together. And I can’t see a way that they’ll be able to agree on any replacement. What they’ll try to do is time the death knell for after the next presidential election; that much they can agree on.

I think they’ve learned they can’t just kill national health insurance. Tom freaking Cotton even said so. It’s a different world now. And it cost DEMs a ton politically to do it, but it was for the national good, at least in terms of the macro-healthcare expectation.

I hope you’re right. I doubt that there are enough pragmatists in the R ranks in order to save themselves, and us. But time’ll tell.

In a way, Trump and the Republicans will make it easy for members of the press and Democratic Party. The new President and GOP are going to be screwing hundreds of thousands of Americans, and on a daily basis. Do the press and Dems have the courage and stamina to point this out? We’ll see.

Good work, guys. The latest poll on the subject says that a whopping 14 percent of Americans want Obamacare repealed without a replacement, 31 percent want a repeal with a replacement (which you folks will never come up with), and 44 percent want Obamacare kept or improved and expanded. Go on, now. Keep on digging.

There have been numerous vehicular metaphors for what is happening. Trump is the car chase that never ends. The ship of state is sinking. But watching the press conference and the senate debate, it looks a lot like a train derailing.

Why do these things always seem to be late-night maneuvers. Can’t stand the light of day, Mitch?

“We must act quickly to bring relief to the American people,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
"Now, let’s just get rid of that burdensome preventive care, those nasty prescriptions you need, and healthcare coverage that has some actual benefits - and replace them with lifetime limits on coverage, the ability for insurance companies to drop your coverage if you need to use it, and a revised pre-existing condition rule so there’s a possibility your cancer treatment will fall through the cracks … oh yeah, almost forgot, and increase insurance company profits and give a huge tax cuts to our very richest friends. Isn’t that a relief? Don’t you feel better now?

Dems have been doing so both on social media and on tv.

The ACA will morph into a state run program for those states who are able to keep it in place. The Red states that had expanded Medicaid are really dead in the water.

Beginning today, they own the consequences.

They are much closer to replace than we realize. They even have a Trump inspired name for the plan: Urine Our Thoughts and Prayers Care.

They break it. They own it.

Hardly a done deal. Many GOP senators want a viable “replacement” before they vote for repeal.

“But for many elements of a new health care law, Republicans are likely to need 60 votes and Democratic support, and at this point the two parties aren’t even talking.”

It’s going to take awhile.

Leaving aside the complete insanity of it all, of course.

It seems one prominent effect Trump has had is to give the GOP even more confidence that it can describe what it’s doing as the exact opposite of what it really is and get away with it. You know: War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength, that sort of thing. I am so, so looking forward to that Democratic committee planning meeting that’s coming up. Because I want nothing more than to help wake this nation up and wipe out these enemies. Wipe them out.
