Or inspire a few… hours… and cocktails… don’t those people get drunk to “celebrate”? I’ve never understood getting fall down drunk as a way of saying “hooray!”
I better understand it as a way to drown one’s misery. In Kav’s case, maybe those are one and the same, hm?
The Reactionaries put Kavanaugh in with a series of bald abuses of power, tracking back through attacks on Federal law enforcement and back to Merrick Garland, in the short term, and the Florida recount, in the long run. They have the control they’ve been seeking through any means at hand and in disregard for the damage they’re doing to the country’s democracy and its institutions. Vote I will, but I fear they’ve paid too much for this to quietly just give it up.
It leaves me seriously anxious about where the country is heading.
Thanks, Bernie Bros Dead-Enders, Jill Stein voters, and other assorted “progressive” assholes who didn’t vote. Fuck you very much. Fuck each and every one of you dumbasses sky-high, now and forever.
The silver lining is that now, no matter who you are or what awful things you’ve done in your life, and even if no employer would hire you after the things revealed in your background check, there’s a place for you on the Supreme Court of the United States.
In response to terrorist attacks, there is profound union and a sense that the country will always prevail.
In response to the malignant achievements of the large minority that chooses to live in a sick alternate reality, things are evidently more challenging.
The founding fathers(!) did not come up with a scheme to eradicate a significant societal sickness. Quite the opposite: they explicitly helped secure its endurance. We don’t have a template for eradicating the homegrown societal disease that is Republicanism. 10, 20, 30 years ago, who would have thought the USA in 2018 would be leaping backwards through homegrown neanderthal politics?
Trump’s approval rating is 42%, only 3 points lower than peak. The problem of climate change might be easier to deal with than the trans-generational cultural-psychological problem that is Republicanism. There is talk of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees by century’s end. Can approval for Trump and Trump-like creatures be reduced by 1.5% by 2020, say? By 2030?
The best reaction to Kavanaugh is to go vote on Nov. 6, contribute to candidates who can help us flip the House and Senate, state houses, governors mansions and state judiciaries. That’s the first step.
The second step is to simply work to marginalize and de-legitimize the SCOTUS. That can come from codifying key positions like abortion rights, gay rights, gun control and voting rights in state laws/constitutions. We’ll have the most difficulty on environmental regs/climate change, but my answer to that is to simply ignore them, don’t implement their changes, and don’t respect any federal mandate which goes against common sense science. This can be done. The red states can have their SCOTUS law, we’ll have blue state law. But red states won’t stay red for long. The demographic changes are working in the Dems’ favor.
Already at the state level (e.g. PA Supreme Court/Michigan/WI on voting rights) and at the district/appellate level (a number of decisions in a lot of areas), Judges are looking at the mealy mouthed opinions of this SCOTUS and are ignoring them. The lower courts and state courts are looking at the weakly reasoned arguments of the conservative SCOTUS and are distinguishing their cases from those holdings. It’s a pretty quick and easy way to render a SCOTUS impotent.
In addition, I would encourage anyone who has been personally wronged by Kavanaugh to file law suits, ethics complaints and seek criminal investigations wherever the evidence warrants. I’m certain Dems would gladly support legitimate claims. In addition, if people or the press investigate his finances and find out who is sugar daddies are, that will also lead to ethics issues because of blackmail risk. Always fight because it matters for every day Americans who struggle.
He can be impeached, if the Dems get a solid majority in both houses. I am not sure if that is advisable but it sure would send a signal to the nation that cheating is not allowed. Then again I doubt the Dems have the balls since they seldom fight back, hey make a lot of noise but only in the chambers once out in public few ever seem to attempt to set the story right.
Not cheesy at all. I keep thinking of my fave Lord of the Rings and all the inspirational speeches made while in dire straights, not sure if they would prevail. You just keep going, no matter what. That is how you win. No matter how many losses you endure you keep going. You don’t waste time on getting depressed or down, you just keep going.
I thought that conservatives never wanted to get to the point that they could overturn Roe v Wade as it was what energized a large portion of their voters. Have they forgotten that? The thinking was that Grandpa and Grandma Rightwingers would stay home once fetus-babies are protected.
In addition to the steps I mentioned above, I also think we need to expand the court to 15 Justices to dilute the power of nut jobs, racists and liars, and also to introduce term limits. There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents adding Justices or term-limiting them by enactment of a new Federal law.
I read on Josh’s twitterfeed I think, that some Republican group was running ads against him using his daughter’s unethical practices of jacking up the price and getting rich by doing so. They were targeting Manchin with those ads. In other words, the ad suggests what kind of father would raise someone like that so full of greed and self-interest? They pulled those ads about a week or so ago in W. VA in exchange for his vote. He had his mind made up awhile back imo. He’s a disgrace to the Democratic party.
What I don’t get is if the man is like 12% up over his opponent in the polls, there really was no reason he had to be such a Benedict Arnold and so politically tone-deaf as usual. He really doesn’t have as much to worry about as far as re-election. Heidkamp, Donnelly, Nelson all voted NO and they had a lot more to lose, and demonstrated a lot more courage and principle behind their decision, even with their own polls so much more closer. Manchin is a disgrace to the party and the country. He’s a careerist and opportunist and ignores even the most basic stuff presented to him because he has no other life besides being an asshole in the Senate and getting a six figure paycheck he doesn’t deserve. He says he’s for the ACA but he just voted for a judge that can and will undo all of it. He’s a fucking phony.
I think talk of impeachment will be warranted after the election. For now, that would just give the GOP inflammatory campaign language - on a silver platter.
Every Democrat running for Congress right now needs to put in their platform that they are in favor of subpoenaing everyone who wasn’t interviewed by the FBI and put the truth of Kavanaugh’s actions out in the spotlight. Also, they must vow to reform the Federal and Supreme Court lifetime appointment tenure once and for all. No other country has lifetime appointments for the Supreme Court and the corruption of the process needs to be fixed once and for all.
PS. Can a Supreme Court justice be subpoenaed to testify before Congress?
