They have known all along he’s an idiot, but the idiot voters won thanks to the damn EC. I’m guessing they thought they could somehow control him, but I think they are finding out he’s even dumber than they realized.
I don’t normally pay any attention to anything David Brooks writes, but my son think Shields and Brooks have good balanced discussions so I gave this one a try. Brooks makes a good point that once people get stuff you can’t take it away without offering something or you’ll lose the next election and Republicans, or at least 3, know this. Mark Shields makes a great analogy that Republicans have been the barking dog chasing the Obamacare bus for 7 years and once they caught it they had no idea what to do with it! I don’t know if Brooks is always this humble in person, maybe he just realizing how idiotic Rs look right now and it’s he embarrassed, but he makes his points speaking in a reasonable way compaired to most right wing nut jobs I hear on fox.

As far as I can tell, the “unanimous” is “unanimous consent,” something which is nearly always given. And the Senate has been holding pro forma session since late 2011 – when Obama was in office and the Democrats controlled the Senate.
So can someone explain to me what is different about this, compared to the last 6+ years?
The party of the President and the party of the Senate majority.

To some extent this is the difference between threatening GOP in the Senate and threatening GOP in the House. The House districts are gerrymandered, while Senators represent a more diverse group.
Still significant. Very significant, even. But I think it also reflects how gravely Trump miscalculated when he dealt with the Senate – having perhaps not realized that it would be so very different from the House.

Yep. Big factor. But you’re also right to point out that the Senate’s a different animal. Much more of a sense of itself as an institution and a coequal power. They don’t like to be yelled at like a bunch of interns taking too long of a break from their filing.

Blocking a president’s ability to make recess appointments is what happens when one party has the White House and the other has the Senate. It would seem the ties between Senate Republicans and Donald Trump have come undone.

Brooks does have the ability to use his brain, I believe he even voted for Obama in 2008. But it’s frustrating how much work he puts into trying to justify the Repugs positions, even though he should (and does) know better. He is willing to change his position but only after he realizes it’s just too impossible to reasonably argue otherwise, and even then, not often enough. And he’ll make some pretty stupid arguments along the way. I feel like he is an old-school conservative that still thinks old-school conservatives can bring the party back to a reasonable place politically. But they can’t, nobody can.
