Discussion: Sen. McCain: 'This Is My Last Term'

Perhaps Mr. “Bomb bomb bomb Iran” can also reflect on the suffering of all the men, women, and children he burned to death by dropping napalm on them in Vietnam.

And I can vote my conscience without worry.”

Nothing was keeping you from doing that before, John. What does that say about you and your legacy? You sold out our conscience for…what? What did you get in that deal? Regrets? To be lumped with the current crop of Republicans? You could have stood years ago, but you didn’t. You’re not even standing up now. Spare us any talk of your conscience. Wherever you lost it, it’s been gone for a very long time.

The “conscience” of a Republican without fear of voters should worry us all.

I guess this will prove one way or another if he has earned the moniker “Maverick”. But really can only prove it has always been BS.

If he keeps voting the same then his “conscience” has been to protect his own monied interests. If he votes differently it proves he has not been a “Maverick” all along.

It would be better to just retire and spend time with Family.

No.

Certainly, gentlemen, it ought to be the happiness and glory of a representative to live in the strictest union, the closest correspondence, and the most unreserved communication with his constituents. Their wishes ought to have great weight with him; their opinion, high respect; their business, unremitted attention. It is his duty to sacrifice his repose, his pleasures, his satisfactions, to theirs; and above all, ever, and in all cases, to prefer their interest to his own. But his unbiassed opinion, his mature judgment, his enlightened conscience, he ought not to sacrifice to you, to any man, or to any set of men living. These he does not derive from your pleasure; no, nor from the law and the constitution. They are a trust from Providence, for the abuse of which he is deeply answerable. Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.

-Edmund Burke, Speech to the Electors of Bristol, Nov 3, 1774

The next day, he became the Member of Parliament for Bristol.

I would argue that as a uniformed officer he was following orders and those deaths and suffering belong at the feet of his commanders.

That said, reflection on the suffering that his dutiful following of orders brought (even if he didn’t attribute the responsibility to himself) should have given him the understanding that “Bomb, Bomb, Iran…” was showed little respect for human life.

That would be Vince Vance, who recorded the (rather successful and popular) parody song McCain was referencing… back in 1980. And the fact that McCain was referencing a 30-year old piece of pop culture should not have been conspicuously missing from the coverage of the incident.

I wonder if we’ll see a redux of the final years of Strom Thurmond, when they would wheel his his drooling, not-quite-dead carcass out on the Senate floor and one of his aides voted for him.

Technically, if he had picked a competent running mate, he might have beat Obama. So perhaps we should be grateful to him?

Sen. McCain: ‘This Is My Last Term’

I have the feeling that wife Cindy & daughter Meghan are already setting the Christmas tree,

McCain and his family should have been more critical of the Bush campaign and their acolytes involved in the ugly invective directed at them in 2000 during the South Carolina primary. The robo callls claiming that he had a black child out of wedlock. The Lost Cause goobers defending the flag of treason and calling McCain soft on the issue as well as the attacks on his military service kind of presaged Trumpism

Sounds like you have been negotiating with the man in the mirror john.
Your legacy is well documented which will leave the living 4 choices when thoughts of you arise.

Pretty sure that decision was made by biology, not you, Crash.

At which time the batshit crazy wingnut governor would appoint some other batshit crazy wingnut to replace him for the next four years.

Yeah, this was not exactly a “REVEALED:” moment. The thing most people have been wondering is if he would die or resign before June 1.

If I were him, I’d probably resign to be able to spend more time with family and putting my affairs in order but I’m not about to tell anybody what they should do with the remainder of their lives.

My daughter’s father-in-law - who is only 61 - was diagnosed with the same kind of cancer right around the time McCain was, and after surgery that removed as much of the tumor as they could see, weeks of radiation and 6 months of chemo, the tumor is back. They always come back, and they come back more aggressively than ever.

Everyone dies, and they don’t die pretty.

I don’t know John McCain. I don’t know his family. I do know that the man’s life has been bookended by things the rest of us can be very grateful we didn’t experience and haven’t been tested by. I don’t agree with his politics, I think for someone who had to have no small amount of courage to survive what he has, he has not always exhibited much moral or political courage in his Senate career, and those less-than-courageous decisions doubtless affected people who needed better from him. But he’s not a monster, he’s just another flawed person, damaged like all of us are, and finally not able to cheat death.

For whatever time he has left, I can give him the space and time and grace to go out on his own terms, to express whatever regrets he has or make whatever apologies he needs to. I don’t know how honest he will be with himself, but I don’t know how honest any of us would be if we were facing what he is.

That was a very mean-spirited rant.
And thank you for it!
