Discussion: Sen. McCain: 'This Is My Last Term'

Dammit John. I liked you, then I hated you, then I KINDA liked you and then you gave us Sarah the First. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Then you were decent to Obama when the crazies came out and then you turned and went full dick when we got closer to the election. You voted against anything Obama! and were kind of a mean little loser and then ‘supported’ Trump until you didn’t. I dunno. Somehow, some part of me still has a shred of affection for you but it is really a shred. Stay well.

I believe that he is not up again until 2022. I’m no doctor but I have the bad feeling he will probably not last until then. :frowning:

Personally I hope his pain is proportionate to that which he inflicted on the nation. So if he did more good than ill he has nothing to worry about. If not…

He has twisted and turned so much over the years it is sometimes hard to know whether to love him or dislike him or both simultaneously.

Yes; I don’t understand this as a bombshell. He’s said he is not running for reelection in 54 months.
If he announces his retirement, that would be major news.

Palin was, and still is, a narcissistic opportunist, but that’s about it.

McCain was a more loyal foot soldier for the GOP than most realize. He was extremely pro-war as well. And let’s not forget his connections to con man Charles Keating.

I realize your question is largely in humor, but it does bring to mind the actual damage he inflicted while in office.

Thank you for your service Sen. McCain, specifically your defense of the ACA during the last administration. Otherwise, good riddance.

Well said.

And if it turns out that he now feels free to make life difficult for Trump another time or two, whether out of patriotism or sheer spite, then I’m OK with that, too.

Yes, you’ve done enough damage. Enjoy your taxpayer funded premium healthcare - while the rest of us go without.

Consider me a cold, stone-hearted, emotionless SOB, but I do not have any tears to wipe away or any f**ks to give.
I have seen too many people who were without healthcare because they couldn’t afford it and who barely had enough money to buy a botlle of generic Tylenol, and this man never lifted a goddamned finger to help them.
I do feel sorry for his daughter, though. Not the pole-dancing blonde one, but the darker one that the McCain family never wants to talk about.

I am sure a noble hero like John McCain will do the right thing and leave his entire estate to the families he scammed during the savings & loan debacle during the 1980s. Or at least apologize for his actions during that time.
Yeah, I know. I’m on the floor laughing, too.

I think what he is saying is that he voted Arizona’s conscience before his own, which in a way, is supposed to be the point in a representative democracy, right? Let’s not kid ourselves: there are very few instances where “voting your conscience” means being willing to vote against your electorate, being primaried and losing your seat. Most just go with the flow. Ego and love of power plays a big part of it.

And when he finally bites it, we will be subjected to 24 hours of glowing media tributes about what a great and honorable man this “moderate” senator was. But every time they are forced to list his “noble” accomplishments, they will cut away for a commercial.

“it would be on this year’s ballot if he leaves office by May 30 under current law.”

Hey, Grumpy Grandpa, about that “conscience” thing you were talking about…

I will give him props for standing up for Obama to that ignorant woman at one of his rallies in 2008. Can you even imagine that with Trump?

I can speak my mind without fearing the consequences much. And I can vote my conscience without worry.

Make the most of it, John, because you’re plainly admitting you’ve been voting against your conscience for ages.

He’s such a maverick that he is willing to take a stand against his own conscience.

Fuck you John McCain. Fuck you for never once standing up for compromise
and bipartisanship when it counted. Fuck you for raising the stature of
ignorant, bigoted demagogues like Palin, which directly led to our
current xenophobic, racist thief in the white house. Fuck you for
waiting until it was “safe” for you to actually speak your mind, just
like all the other cowardly republicans who are retiring
from politics with massive pensions and healthcare while condemning the
average American to be indentured servants to the healthcare industry.
Fuck you, that cancer is a fitting end because it is painful, slow, and debilitating. Fuck
you, John McCain, being a war hero 50 years ago does not absolve you
from your selfish, glutenous political record.
