Discussion: Seattle Seahawks May Be Planning A National Anthem Protest For 9/11

You know what would be a good protest? Playing “This Land Is Your Land” instead of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

(“This Land” was supposedly written as a rejoinder to “God Bless America,” but what the hey.)

I find it, oh I dunno, kind of IRONIC that everyone is whining about a protest on 9/11 when you have a candidate/sidekick running for President that denigrate the President, a party that can’t pull their heads out to DENOUNCE the crap but run to the microphones to lambast a sports team for exercising their CONSTITUTIONAL rights? Wow.

THAT would work!!! I like it.

Good. The more the better. I am so sick of the way Kaepernick has been treated over this, over not standing for a stupid song that is hard to sing and has no relevance. I am so sick of all this nationalism bullshit

Yes, please, we must be sure to honor the veterans. They’d never assess a situation and think the nation needed a drastic jolt and change of course.

What I’m sick of is the people who so blindly follow that nationalism without ANY question – so much so, that they can’t/won’t stop to think about what Kaepernick is trying to get across (which, btw, I think he’s getting across quite nicely … but only if one is open to listening).

I’m a pretty proud, patriotic American, myself, and I gladly stand for the NA, put my hand over my heart, take off my hat, etc., handle my flag properly, and so on … but I’m also very willing to listen to others who believe they have legitimate grievances. Anyone who’s sentient knows Kaepernick has a point.

I would be more impressed with their courage and zeal if they play the game on their knees.

The three signs of Fascism:

  1. State-enforced Worship of the Military
  2. State-enforced Nationalism
  3. State-enforced scapegoating of Minorities
The old “You are either for us or against us” spiel.

I attend many professional sporting events. It’s gotten to the point I feel I’ve visited a military recruiting office and not an NBA game. A military color guard accompanies the singing of the national anthem. Promos for events helping veterans are touted throughout the game on the Jumbotron. During timeouts a camera focuses in on a group of National Guard or veterans, the sideline announcer hectoring the crowd to stand and salute and applaud them. Souvenir stands with all manner of apparel and stuff in camo motifs. Honorary aisle ushers in military uniform. Tables set up in concourses to sign up for the military or National Guard. Goddamned everything you can think of save Bob Hope and Bing Crosby selling me war bonds. STFU!! I came to watch a fricking basketball game! And it’s the same at an NFL or MLB game. I’d include hockey, but that’s not a sport. Geez.

Well actually, it’s quite relevant: it’s racist (see verse 3 and http://www.snopes.com/2016/08/29/star-spangled-banner-and-slavery/).

I vote for “This Land Is Your Land” as a replacement.

Exactly. If they are against a war, they mysteriously abdicate any respect because reasons.

Hoser.

I vote we put the damned ball in play and skip the patriotic hosannas.

I’d be even more impressed if they played the game without protective gear, like ruggers do.

Take off.

Watching Trump I’d believe he’s chased more than one parked car sans helmet.

Their coach is a 9/11 truther.

khaaannn. You forgot to list, 4) Organized Sports.

I’d be even more impressed if they played the game naked and greased.

Trump: Colored and Non-Christians attacked us on 9/11. We need to simply get rid of them from earth.
FOX: It cant be simpler than that.
