How shocking that “Strip Search Sammy” has no problems with Republican gerrymandering. I’m trying to decide who is the absolute worst Associate Justice at this point; so many choices.
The damage the Rs did with the Gorsuch stonewalling and Comey did with his grandstanding — and Americans did in supporting Trump — will be very long-lasting, if not permanent.
So much for my hope the R gerrymandering might be curbed and my vote might someday count in Texas. Now I can only hope that demographics can eventually outweigh the gerrymandering.
I wonder how much compen$ation Alito, Roberts & Gorsuch receive for these “rulings”? Are they paid per-case, or on a flat-rate per month? Is it a huge amount, or are they as easily bribed as your average politician, selling out for $1,500 or so?
What’s implicit in the Court’s decisions on these various cases is that they view gerrymandering and other voting rights cases as hot potatoes. They very badly want to let things work out on their own in the political arena. They’re punting on a lot of cases to wait for 2018 election results where they expect that Dem victories in WI, NC will render gerrymandering cases moot.
On racial discrimination, I suspect the Court believes we’re at a demographic tipping point where by 2022 there will be more latinos than whites in TX, and that should solve the issue. At that time, conservative/religious whites will be the ones making discrimination arguments in court and ask to be a protected class.
They get paid their salary as SCOTUS justices. Make no mistake, they don’t need bribes. They are true believers, making them all the more dangerous.
I’ll never forget that disastrous night in November 2016 as this epic train wreck was unfolding before our eyes. My blood ran cold that night as I realized that we had lost the Supreme Court for at least a generation with Trump’s theft of the White House - a result that might never be undone. If Trump were ousted today we would still have an insane imposter in Gorsuch occupying a Supreme Court seat that does not belong to him, rendering Trump’s removal satisfying but largely symbolic. We have doomed ourselves in this country and I don’t think it will ever be fixed.
This. You don’t need to bribe people playing on the same team with you. Although the occasional bonus for particularly good performance does not go amiss.
And don’t forget Clarence, who’s STILL pissed off and sticking it to the liberals because of his high-tech lynching. For years, lily-white Ginny Thomas ran the VA Tea Party. She still might … no conflicts of interest naturally.
The two most powerful players in the GOP’s strategic planning for state and national elections continue to be … Gerry Mander and Jim Crow II.
Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Justice Neil Gorsuch, filed a brief concurring opinion that said they did not believe the Voting Rights Act could be applied to redistricting.
That to me that is incredible BS.
When this does bite them in the ass, I’m sure the winger Supremes will come running to their aide and make them a protected white class. Infuriating.
It would be nice to hear some discussion from Democrats about impeaching some of these Justices. If Trump’s presidency is a crime, than his justice nominees should also be. Plus, Clarence Thomas’ wife has been taking bribes for decades.
But, nothing can be done, I am sure…
The so-called conservatives on the Supreme Court continue to chip away at the court’s reputation and its legitimacy. Worse yet, they seem oblivious to the harm they are doing to the institution.
Sotomayor’s dissent completely fucking shreds these assholes in just about every way imaginable. It would be an embarrassment and a thorough shaming to the majority if they weren’t simply neofascist pricks hellbent on securing GOP/conservative power through any means necessary.
But of course, HRC was exactly the same as Trump…no, WORSE…
At the very least Gorsuch should go. He’s as illegitimate as Trump is in my mind and shouldn’t be on the Supreme Court.
Sotomayor:
The fundamental right to vote is too precious to be disregarded in this manner.
The Republicans aren’t disregarding their right to vote. On the contrary, they don’t want it diluted, not one bit.
Â
And you know what will happen at that point.
In 2022, Latinos will outnumber Whites in Texas. This year, the polling indicates that Beto O’Rourke will have the closest Senate race in decades. In Congressional seats around areas where the Democratic share of the vote is increasing, Dems are starting to pick up the Indies needed to have a chance to win 2-5 seats. 2018 could see an acceleration of trends that have been put into play for a few years.
We have McConnell to blame for this. We’ll see if the McConnell rule re SCOtUS appointments in the last year of a presidential term is enforced in 2020 if a seat opens that year.Somehow, I think the McConnell rule will be forgotten.
The Constitution of the United States was designed to keep wealthy white heterosexual male property owners in power. It has been extraordinarily effective at that for more than 2 centuries.
This decision is simply another in a long series designed to fulfill that mission.
Americans are brainwashed from early in life to believe that the Constitution by the so-called “Founding Fathers” is infallible. In fact, it is obsolete and has become a suicide pact. The wealthy white heterosexual male property owners in charge have been leading us on a path to ecological catastrophe, and there is nothing that we can do to stop it in time.
